this may come across harsh and i don't mean it that way. but unless you are not interested in these topics because you want to monetize these particular skills in themselves, you don't need any of it to be a successful internet marketer. in fact, i even think the more you know, the worse for you.
because the role of a marketer is selling, not programming. hence he should be concerned about mastering the pre-sales and sales process with technological means, but not the technological slkills to realize a technical web solution.
it would simply be a waste of time, money and particularly skills if a good marketer is spending time on developing things if he instead can work on the salesfront during that time and getting earnings.
a lot of people here seem very technologically adept and they seem to like to spent a good amount of time improving these skills. but at the same time i feel, that those skills get into their way of making money, as they are never really satisfied with the results they achieved from a technological perspective, so they postpone every launch and say "i'll do that tomorrow, just one little tweak here and i will be going live".
worst fault in my point of view.
with the help of wickedfire i have really been able to stop all that focusing on technological matters, because i have seen, that the really successful guys have an idea about technology, but their focus is on doing business. so now, i outsource design, content and other matters now as i know, that although i CAN do it, i rather should spent my time on managing the overall plan and bring myself in on those activities, that are crucial to the money making process: process design for sales / conversion tracking, affiliate offer analysis, profitability calculation, project calculation: so, marketing-, business- and projectmanagement in general.
well, i could go on and on but you get the general idea and my point of view: if you want to be a marketer, then go out and do marketing. if you want to do a developer, then develop. if you want to to be a designer, design. but whatever you do, do it the real way or rather ask yourself if you should not leave that area to someone who really has the skills and if you instead shouldn't be focusing on the core competencies in the internet marketing arena: using the internet to sell stuff to people.
there is rarely a jack of all trades that actually is good at everything. rarely.
