Joesph Goebbels was a fan of FDR's New Deal

Of course he did. I was talking to erect about this recently, and how America pre-WWII was expected to either pursue socialism or fascism as "planned economies" were seen to be the power of the future.

There was almost no argument for the individual or free markets at that time. The mainstream of opinion was for total government in one of two styles.

Sadly, most of those institutions setup prior to and during WWII, as well as the entitlement socialism mentality are still very much a part of life in America, and a huge part of the fabric of modern European socialism.

Cultural evolutions take a lot longer to overturn than say the 10 year run that pagers had, or the brief obsession women had with big hair during the late 80s and early 90s.

When you get done with the century of self, look into the Singularity, 3d printing and nanotech. Depending how young you are, you probably have a very good shot at life extension technology towards the end of your life.

That of course assumes you have the financial means to take advantage of it, so keep grinding hard.

I have to conclude that for the vast majority of people, personal liberty and opportunity for individual advancement are scarcely even considered, and that what really motivates them are "libidinous desires" like jobs, safety, and security. Planned economies speak to this need for security louder than the free market ever could. The clarion message of free-market economies is that nothing is secure, and I think that people have a very difficult time accepting this.

The problem with the free markets is that there is nothing to gain by organizing the free market, whereas there is a lot to gain by organizing socialism, and so resources flow there.

But you make a good point about the economic and emotional arguments.

Socialism is like acai berries.

Free markets are like eating less and starting to work out.

No surprise which one has a broader appeal.

I agree with this. The consolidation of power creates incredible opportunities for the people closest to the center.

Guerilla, my only thoughts are that the technologies you mention, such as nanotech will probably follow the same cost curve as computers, assuming nobody attempts to stop their progress, so should be easily available to anyone.

No excuse to not create and produce though :)

I forsee a day where nanobot / biotech / 3d printing designs are freely available online, it would take a lot of government to stop that, I'm sure they'll try though.
