over here
Hi,

Haven't been around here for a while, trying to keep going with my sites with the plan of getting enough money to leave my job when we get calls on Friday after work to meet at the regional head office on Monday. Long story short, we were all made redundant yesterday and guess what? Pay day this month ain't happening. Sure, the company directors got an 84% pay rise in the past 4 years, but naturally they haven't any money to pay us on Friday (28th Sept). They knew this, of course, but never bothered to tell us until the very last minute so they could squeeze as much work out of us as possible. That's not going to help my bank account or my bills this month as I get paid monthly.

I've been self employed before and the reason i actually went into the job area I did and went back to uni for it was for the only reason I wanted to work for someone else... job security. That's a joke.

Sure, my hubby and me have a bit of savings that will see us through a couple of months but there are a lot of personal medical things going on right now too that need that money too that the NHS won't fund. How do you decided between that?

I really want to keep going with my automated / hands off stuff as much as possible, but i'm thinking that there's huge potential in my local area for mobile websites. Hey, I've got the time now and it will be money in my hand ASAP. Any advice on this is very welcome (esp about avoiding problems etc).

I'm also thinking of getting into more black hat stuff as that seems to be where the "quicker" money is, but I'm worried I'll spend more time reading than doing with that.

just needed a rant, if i was ever determined to work for myself again this has only made that determination a million times stronger. I will never let another person have that kind of control over my work time, stress levels, or money ever again.

To all of you who are doing this part time with a "real job" offline... be warned: I was in one of the most secure types of careers.

There are many things I'm very grateful to my parents for.

One of them is something my dad (a self-employed mechanic) said to me when I was about 9 or 10.

I asked him "Dad, isn't being self-employed risky compared to having a job?"

His reply: "No, because having a job is like only having one customer. If they fire you, you're screwed. Sure, I may go through periods where I'm not making as much money as other times, but unless I did something really stupid, I'm not going lose ALL of my customers".

@OP:

Also, isn't it illegal when your bosses knew they couldn't make payroll but knowingly still made you work the entire week?

Any WF law peeps can chime in here? This doesn't seem right...

Thanks paper_chase. They let us work a full month. Have filled in forms to claim wages from uk government but it'll probs be after christmas before I see that. Not much use to me right now. Gonna start some cold calls to gauge mobile site interest.

Thanks for link to othet thread which i'd looked at. Funny how different the responce has been.

in california they have labor laws and i imagine where you live its much the same. if they withhold pay they could very well be fined which goes right in your pockets. this was how i turned a $120 check into a $1200 check when i was 16 and dealt with a difficult employer.

good luck

Didn't realise you were in the UK... this is actually a pretty heinous offence over here, trading whilst insolvent. If they're going bust, write to the Insolvency service (and the Liquidator) about this fact and get your co-workers to do the same. There's a decent chance they could get banned from acting as company directors and/or made to contribute personally to the company's debts, if the liquidator finds any misfeasance.
