Just got out of Jail... Need some (serious) advice...

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this reminded me of a great scam...

A few years ago my boss sold his old truck on Craigslist. Did everything legit, sold it to the guy without the old plates on it.

Fast forward to a few months, my boss is getting a shitload of tickets mailed to him, with those stoplight speeding photos showing his old truck with his old license plate on it. Turns out the guy who bought the car wrote down my boss' plate number, then went home, photoshopped a DC plate, printed it out, and stuck it on the front of the car!

The fucking balls of that guy.

Get a lawyer.

Then get a new or slightly used Honda, and drive it for the next 10-12 years. It won't break down.

Stop buying so many cars, you are just asking for trouble.

Both cars were Hondas. I stick to them because I know them like the back of my hand, theyre cheap, easy as fuck to fix and maintain, and they get the job done. Just bought from the wrong assholes I guess.

I love that they took you to jail for having the wrong plates and no one here is angry about that. There's a piece of metal hanging off your car that didn't match up with the one the government wanted you to have, so they pointed a gun at you, kidnapped you, and put you in a cell.

And left my girlfriend on the side of a remote road 13 miles from the nearest -ANYTHING-, in the Arizona summer... With no cell service. She finally got a cab, and the dude told her "Sometimes when people don't have money they just give a blowjob for a free ride...". Thank god she had my wallet. And that dude will be found someday.... o_o

Well on the other side of this my mom just bought a car off of craigslist and it was a total lemon, like not even safe lemon. She tried to reason with the seller that stopped taking her calls. She had paid with a Insurance check from her old car, Endorsed it and gave it to him. So she Called the Insurance company to stop payment on the check, and and called them to pick up their car. A month later deputy's show up at her door charging her with felony check fraud.

But crazy thing was he forged the title on the car he sold her. Now He is facing felony forgery.

Beware of Craigslist.
P.S. Any craigslist posters in here, I need to sell a car. :-)

Jesus. Shit like this sucks. Like, what the fuck do you do? The law needs another step... In order to press any Felony charges, they should have a panel of like 5 random citizens, whom you get to speak with and EXPLAIN, who then vote to press charges or not. A system like that would be fucking WIN.

Wow. Just wow. What a dick!

Watch out dude, I know a guy that bought a car that was under a fake title and was charged with possession of stolen property, charged with felony and did cold hard time.

Lawyer up now.

What fucking state do you live in where you think it's ok to drive around in a car you bought -- with the old plates on it? I know you don't live in NY. I mean WTF-- you have to register and have insurance on that bitch-- and you can't transfer plates that you never owned.

Black dudes in the south bronx get shot at for this!

Car is legit, the charge for the plate is a misdemeanor. But I believe you. Shit is so fucked up.

But you have X amount of time to transfer the title and register/insure the vehicle. I am within that time, thus it is a non-issue. Well, it SHOULD be a non-issue. It is only an issue because the plate was for another vehicle, not the one it was on.

There ya go, you had a few typos.

lmao

I agree. Maybe I just don't fully understand what happened but I feel like this isn't really that serious. You have tags on your car that isn't yours, so what? It's a piece of metal with numbers... and some people are saying if the situation was a tad different you could get jail time? That's a little ridiculous.

I can understand you mad a silly mistake and at MOST you should pay a fine or something. I just feel like since its a small problem, why couldn't it just be explained to the officer there.

I'm really not sure... I told him the story (which I never do, I usually don't talk to cops, but in this case, I am totally not guilty of putting someone else's plate on my car... His response: Well I will let the prosecutor figure out what's going on...

Thanks Mr. Officer.

Ok, that seems like an appropriate comment. I thought he didn't really say a word and just took you to jail. As far as he knows it could be a bad situation and he would get in trouble. Still seems really silly and sounds like this won't be a problem.

I once sold a car to a friend who didn't bother to change the plates. He got like 15 parking tickets that I ended up with. Good times. He is no longer my friend.

Ouch. How the fuck do you get so many parking tickets anyways? I've had like 2 in my entire life, and that's just from forgetting to move my car when the street sweeper comes around.

American?

Of course.

Sadly, it's a public pretender for me... It will be a few days until they are assigned, so until then I'm gathering advice and evidence. I think I just found a picture of the person I purchased the car from, with one of their old vehicles in the background, with the same plate in question on it.

Easy show them the bil of sale with the seller's info which you verified by looking at their license when you bought the car .Didn't do that? Get out of this lame little car business. Don't tell meyou also paid cash so there's no record there.

VIN/License would match the title (or least the VIN for sure), the titles don't show the tags, cuz he's talking bout a tag, the lil plastic square you stick onto the corner of the license plate. And you usually don't get a license plate with a brand new car, so its unlikely that was on the title. At best you could verify that the title is for the same car, but not for the plate/tags.

Makes no sense. When you buy a car you always get plates (or temp plates - usually a paper you hang in the window) in your name with your insurance when you drive the car away.

Well if you buy brand new, or off a dealer lot, yea...

Every time I've ever bought a used car, it never went that way, basically got the title, and least temp insurance from a local agent. Then you took the title to DMV (or if you're in michigan to the Secretary of State as there's no DMV in michigan), and then showing them proof of insurance and title you pick up a new plate/tags after paying the tax for the sale of the car, and for the cost of title and registration.
