BTW, if you're thinking of replicating his success, don't bother. Grabbing high value domain names these days requires hundreds of thousands/ millions of dollars in startup capital.

I'm guessing the # of competition has skyrocketed by 700- 1800% since 2000- 2003 (the heyday)

ICANN should remove the Cameroon country code. How many people have the resources to setup a meeting with the government of a country, and fly people there to discuss something like this? It's fucking lame, I hate people who park massive amounts of pages.

Before you say it, yes I'm jealous! But.. I think his whole .cm scheme is pretty lame. I mean, why the fuck does the country even get a code, if ALL their traffic goes to a single domain. It's retarded
 
Only unregistered .cm domains (or those that he's registered) go to his ad-serving pages. Pretty lame or extremely brilliant? I agree with you about the large number of parked pages out there. At some point I think that web surfers will become more sophisticated and will realize what parked pages are and will bounce when they hit them. At this point, domainers with large portfolios of type-in traffic domains will have to innovate and figure out a better way for monetizing their traffic than simply throwing up a 1-page ad-based site.

When the crash happens, these big name domainer's will just cash in on their behemoth portfolios by selling them to the highest bidder.

Then they won't have to worry about innovation. They are sitting on millions of dollars worth of virtual real estate they can sell at the drop of a hat.

Yun Ye wanted out and he got out in 2004 after selling his portfolio to some private company. The deal was worth $134 mil.

WTF.... they have as much right to a country TLD as the US or any other country.

If the Cameroon Government decides to do a deal with some entrepreneur that makes them money then fair play to them - I'm sure Cameroon needs the cash more than many western countries and they wouldn't have signed the deal if it wasn't going to benefit them. It doesn't exactly harm the average user who mistypes does it?

I think it's unfair to EVERYONE! We are all suffering because of this (not much because of how small most of our websites are, but still). I mean, every domain you own someone has probably mis-spelled it once and been redirected to agoga. I would much rather have their browser let them know the page isn't found so they realize they made an error than get redirected and think my branded site is a steaming pile of ad shit.

I know, I realize I can't do anything about it. I just think it's kinda fucked up. I don't get how his "wildcard" will hold up in court though, I'd assume the trademark holders would argue he should filter all trademarks out. I'm sure eventually his little scheme will get shut down, at least for the popular typos he's making most of the money from..

How many small businesses have bothered registering their trademarks in Cameroon? I don't think someone could really argue that a US trademark should apply.

If this system wasn't there it would just return a 'not found' page, so it's not like it's taking away visitors that would have otherwise reached your site directly. If you are that concerned about the odd visitor who can't type just register the domain (along with all the typos you'd need to grab to catch everyone).
 
google.cm goes to a paid-to-survey site, but yahoo.cm goes to yahoo.

microsoft.cm goes to the silly little agoga.com site...
 
Yeah, I'm pretty sure you have to have a company "office" there, but a small bribe could probably work just as well...
