LED technology has improved dramatically over the last few years. The contrast ratio on some LEDs now surpasses plasma. LED is brighter than plasma. LED weighs less, is thinner, and consumes less energy than plasma. LED also tends to be available in larger sizes than plasma, like the OP's 80" request, whereas plasma tends to end around 64".

LoL away, but plasma is a dead technology, with most manufacturers wanting out of the market to sell LED, OLED, etc.

None of the pro's you mentioned about LED are regarding picture quality. They are all about peasant factors like weight and power consumption.

LED's are glorified LCD's and they suffer from the same problems their predecessors did. Poor viewing angles, blacks that aren't nearly as deep, ghosting during fast scenes, etc.

When it comes to actually sitting down and watching a movie, watching a live sporting event, or playing your favorite video game, nothing beats a Plasma.

And Panasonic is definitely still working on Plasma technology.

So once again, pls go.

I'd say you'd have a point... 3 or 4 years ago. What part of better contrast ratios and better brightness didn't you get? All those issue you speak of aren't relevant anymore with higher end LEDs. The contrast is better than plasma, the brightness is better than plasma, viewing angles are 170 degrees or more, ghosting issues are a thing of the past, and...

Are you one of those neckbeards that sits at home checking out specs on shit but never actually leaves the house?

Go to any showroom and you will see that the only thing a LED has on a Plasma is brightness level. And who the fuck wants more brightness? Despite what the specs say, in person you can tell the contrast is alot better on a Plasma, and they display rich, inky blacks.

They only thing that can compare to the picture quality on a Plasma is those 4K Ultra High-Def OLED TV's. But the price point is way off.

And do some more research past the 1st page of Google before you start quoting shit. Panasonic is stopping R & D of Plasma technology as it's almost perfect. They are doing more R & D on OLED TV's now. Plasma production will remain the same.

There's not a single OLED 4k screen on the market yet. Of the major TV manufacturers I think only LG and Samsung even have a single regular HD OLED model each. 4K OLEDs have only just been unveiled and won't come to market until next year. So it's kind of hard to compare what you can't even buy yet with a dying technology.

And now you're saying that Panasonic IS stopping R&D on plasma technology. Can't you make up your mind? Do you really think they're going to continue to produce big, heavy, power hungry televisions when cheaper, lighter, more energy efficient LED technology is already surpassing plasma picture quality?

Panasonic says they will continue production to at least 2014 and I bet they stop completely once their 4K models come to market, because plasma technology will never exist as a 4k model, at least not from Panasonic and the price point on 4k is going to come down dramatically in the next year.

Trust me when I say I've been in a few TV showrooms in the last year and I'm perfectly capable of seeing that higher end LED screens are amazing and I wouldn't buy plasma for the aforementioned reasons.

Besides, the OP wanted an 80" screen, and as far as I know the biggest plasmas are 65", at least they are from Panasonic. Maybe other manufacturers make bigger ones, I don't know.

I don't feel the need to continue on with this dick measuring contest. But here are my retorts:

-I just saw a Sony 4K TV at Best Buy. It was beautiful. They had no price tag on it though.
-You originally implied that Panasonic was stopping Plasma production, was is not true. They are stopping R & D. Which makes sense since OLED is on the horizon. But I can't see production stopping anytime soon as any true videophile will want to purchase a Plasma over an LED. It is simply the best picture quality currently available on the market. OLED may surpass it, but we have to wait and see.
-And OP should obviously get a projector if he is looking at the 80 inch plus size range.

Anything today compared to 10 years is going to be improvement, drastically.

A bottom end, generic low end projector today will be miles ahead of a high end top of the line projector from 10 years ago. I think you would be safe with anything you pick compared to something 10 years ago.

Its like computers. I had one from 10 years ago. A $400 Walmart one from today is 1000x better then the one I still have from 10 years ago.
 
The TV will be better for depth of colour and lighting and be more responsive in terms of refresh rate.

Projector would be a lot easier to take around your friends for big ppv events and world cup matches though....
