Learning To Type Properly

Dragon Naturally Speaking FTW. I love it, although I can type decently fast I still need to look at the keyboard which slows me down. I do desire to learn the right way though maybe I will look into that zombie typing game.

But I type around 70-75 wpm with 2 fingers. Do you think there'd be much benefit in bothering using all fingers?

I would like to see that. And, yes.. of course. You save time. Time is money. Plus, you wont look like a grandma.

Wow, that's a big difference.

Do you do this without looking at the keyboard? If you do...you're superman!

I teach typing and computer skills two weekends a year to people in my area, so I've seen the difference. The two-finger typist always fades next to people who use proper technique.

While you may be just fine typing your way, it's not ergonomically healthy since you're not resting your palms -- thus making your fingers deal with more impact than they need to. Also, the constant movement of your eyes from keyboard, to monitor places extreme strain on the eyes, neck, back, etc. This almost always leads to dwindling productivity over thousands of words.

Proper typing skills help prevent arthritis down the road (not stop it.) Unfortunately, it's really hard to teach someone to type properly after years of doing it the wrong way.

This. I'm 34 and had a required typing class in 3rd or 4th grade. And, I went to school in MS. Really amazed at so many who haven't had to learn it.

Same. I'm 27 and learned to type in school on an Apple IIe. Typing lessons were sandwiched in between intense bouts of Oregon Trail and Carmen Sandiego. I can't type with two fingers even when trying (except my expert iPhone thumb typing).

If you were to ask me what I consider to be the most valuable class I ever took, I would tell you typing in HS. Everything and anything else, either in HS or college, was a total waste of my fucking time. And I don't remember any of it. Typing, however . . . well, I use it every fucking day. Skillz classes FTW.

Haha, yeah I guess, but just wondering whether my time's better invested into making me money directly... hmm.

I don't really look at the keyboard tbh. When I do, it's more out of reflex than anything else. I can type on a table, no keyboard.

I'm not sure I totally agree with you about the two finger typist always fading to those with proper technique - typing with two fingers, I had a race against the full time touch typing teacher, typing out of a book. I won :p

I guess I'm a little different from most two-finger-typers, in that when I'm typing, I don't hover over the keyboard, and I do rest my wrists. My fingers just move around a lot. I'm guessing that's ok ergonomically?

I type faster than anyone I know, whether they're using two fingers or ten, I can still easily beat most people, and beat everyone else.

Woot, I guess? :D

Learn home-row keys, then play counter strike without a mic. Try to talk a lot of shit without dying or play in team scrims. I think that's where my speed mostly comes from.

I learned as a kid by playing games like runescape at night when I wasn't allowed to. I'd keep all the lights off so I had to force myself to memorize where letters were to be able to chat with people.

a few years later & I can now type 120+ wpm.

get software called Mavis Beacon. Its typing software that helps you type. I used it when i was in 8th grade Keyboarding class. its gay as fuck but will help you via repetition.

I can type 90-100 wpm NP . im 27.

It's because I'm on FB all the time chatting plus my AP computer science class lol.

Maybe, but if your doing a 10,000 word script/s then someone who types with 8 fingers is going to get less pain than someone that types with 2.

You have 8 fingers so why not make use of them?

You also have to consider how many errors the people at 100wpm a minute are making compared to those at 60wpm, no point typing at a higher speed if your fingers go all over the place .. hence if you use more fingers then those individual fingers are usually trained more to use certain keys and your error rate should be lower with touch typing.

If you haven't learned to touch type yet you should start tomorrow - nothing else you could do will give you a better ROI over the rest of your life.

Also if you haven't learned yet you might as well learn :

Dvorak Simplified Keyboard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's how all keyboards should be - we just haven't ever made the switch. Kind of like the metric system.

That's a good point, qwerty keyboards were designed to be slow so the arms in type writers didn't get stuck together when two keys were pressed close together!

Hmm, yeah, you make a good point. I think I'll give it a go, see how it goes.

Thanks :)

Might sound like an old idea but mavis beacon is great for learning to type and beyond that it's just practice practice practice.. practice when the keyboard isn't there, practice when it is is.. living and breathin it can only lead you to getting better at it.. started at 25 wpm and on a bad day I'm still at 80 wpm.

I learned with Type to Learn (same thing as Mavis Beacon) back in elementary school, so I grew up doing it the right way.

Does typing with all fingers really speed you up that much? I type with just my index fingers, plus thumbs for spacebar and ring finger for the letter A, but I had a set of touchtyping lessons once, and I could type faster with two fingers than the teacher could with all of hers (and she wasn't just some part time secretary, teaching it was her fulltime job). I didn't really find using all my fingers helped with speed, so I just stopped using them, but maybe it's because I didn't continue doing it for long enough?
75 WPM is still pretty slow, I type 120-130 WPM using all my fingers.

Exactly. If you can break the 60 WPM mark with two fingers...imagine what can be accomplished with 8 fingers that are locked into the zone.
