Dragon Naturally Speaking FTW. I love it, although I can type decently fast I still need to look at the keyboard which slows me down. I do desire to learn the right way though maybe I will look into that zombie typing game.
But I type around 70-75 wpm with 2 fingers. Do you think there'd be much benefit in bothering using all fingers?
Shit, its 2011 - If you're under 25 you should have learned that shit in school, early on.
Wow, that's a big difference.

This. I'm 34 and had a required typing class in 3rd or 4th grade. And, I went to school in MS. Really amazed at so many who haven't had to learn it.
Haha, yeah I guess, but just wondering whether my time's better invested into making me money directly... hmm.I would like to see that. And, yes.. of course. You save time. Time is money. Plus, you wont look like a grandma.
I don't really look at the keyboard tbh. When I do, it's more out of reflex than anything else. I can type on a table, no keyboard.Do you do this without looking at the keyboard? If you do...you're superman!
I teach typing and computer skills two weekends a year to people in my area, so I've seen the difference. The two-finger typist always fades next to people who use proper technique.
While you may be just fine typing your way, it's not ergonomically healthy since you're not resting your palms -- thus making your fingers deal with more impact than they need to. Also, the constant movement of your eyes from keyboard, to monitor places extreme strain on the eyes, neck, back, etc. This almost always leads to dwindling productivity over thousands of words.
Proper typing skills help prevent arthritis down the road (not stop it.) Unfortunately, it's really hard to teach someone to type properly after years of doing it the wrong way.
I guess I'm a little different from most two-finger-typers, in that when I'm typing, I don't hover over the keyboard, and I do rest my wrists. My fingers just move around a lot. I'm guessing that's ok ergonomically?
I type faster than anyone I know, whether they're using two fingers or ten, I can still easily beat most people, and beat everyone else.
Woot, I guess?![]()
If you haven't learned to touch type yet you should start tomorrow - nothing else you could do will give you a better ROI over the rest of your life.
Also if you haven't learned yet you might as well learn :

It's how all keyboards should be - we just haven't ever made the switch. Kind of like the metric system.
Hmm, yeah, you make a good point. I think I'll give it a go, see how it goes.Maybe, but if your doing a 10,000 word script/s then someone who types with 8 fingers is going to get less pain than someone that types with 2.
You have 8 fingers so why not make use of them?
You also have to consider how many errors the people at 100wpm a minute are making compared to those at 60wpm, no point typing at a higher speed if your fingers go all over the place .. hence if you use more fingers then those individual fingers are usually trained more to use certain keys and your error rate should be lower with touch typing.
75 WPM is still pretty slow, I type 120-130 WPM using all my fingers.Does typing with all fingers really speed you up that much? I type with just my index fingers, plus thumbs for spacebar and ring finger for the letter A, but I had a set of touchtyping lessons once, and I could type faster with two fingers than the teacher could with all of hers (and she wasn't just some part time secretary, teaching it was her fulltime job). I didn't really find using all my fingers helped with speed, so I just stopped using them, but maybe it's because I didn't continue doing it for long enough?
I learned with Type to Learn (same thing as Mavis Beacon) back in elementary school, so I grew up doing it the right way.
