"Legal Issues for IMers" book -your input?

for you guys saying to use some technology so its not a pdf, sections still need to be copyable for it to be useful (privacy policy for example). As soon as any text is copyable, its easy to made a pdf and torrent it.

Basically my point is using DRM on text is retarded. The majority of his target audience will purchase this simply because he's a lawyer and (if you are smart) you don't steal from lawyers. Not to mention this will save them money in their own legal preparation fees.

Mont, sell the ebook, get the data, make a hardcover with extras, email your list to buy it, boom best seller, free publicity from that, $$$$$. PS Shawn Collins owns a book publishing company and I'm just guessing here but he would probably be all over this.

info on what adult affiliates are required to put up to protect themselves. Also a list of things that you'd think wouldn't be a problem but are (I've been told a few but would like to hear it from a lawyer / someone who is an authority) Best of luck on the book. I'll pick up a copy once it's up.

This would be great, I'd love to get one. One thing I would suggest is to include more sample contracts/forms/terms/policies/agreements etc. at the end of the book. Also, as noted above on the taxes - would be great to see some tips on how to properly deal with payments/international payments/paypal payments when outsourcing the work and make sure that you are covered on taxes.
Thanks!

Would be great if you could convert it to hardcover. For some reason I hate reading on the computer, and would rather have a book at hand to look through quickly.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input so far, it is really appreciated. I'm looking at doing several purchase options at different price points: a physical copy (probably printed from LuLu), an Amazon listing for both bound copies and Kindle downloads, and a cheaper downloadable PDF for instant access.

As has been mentioned by several posters, I wll probably do some sort of "membership/get updates" type of site that people can get the latest info from, perhaps some free consulting/question answering from myself and other attorneys for premium members. These different options will allow buyers to decide what level of service they want, what format they want, and hopefully provide some more long term value and access for purchasers.

Definitely buying a hard copy once it's out! Awesome!!

I referenced your legal questions threads several times, thanks for all your help so far and looking forward to the launch! :)

Sitepoint might be a good model to copy.

They release a few chapters to show quality.

Allow pdf and/or hardcopies (different price points - plus even if you do the hardcopy they charge a little more for pdf access as well).

Good idea, in fact of I have a goal of releasing the first 2 chapters (rough draft of course) to WF members who want to review it this wknd, This will just be a beta version, but PM me if you are interested in getting it to review.

Regarding the members only area, test fee against "free forever for book buyers."

For example, say your book is $27. Charge $27/month for access to the members only area. Early book buyers (think launch) get free access for six months. After six months, they're booted unless they pay - maybe a lower price point ($17) for being launch customers.

Everyone else who comes to your site has a choice...

1. buy your book for $27
2. subscribe to your site (and maybe PDF newsletter?) for $27/month and get the book (and updates) free

Sounds like a no-brainer for folks to subscribe. But a lot of people won't. They'll be afraid you'll rebill 'em to death.

I'm not sure if you're doing this solely to make money, or to eventually become the authority for speaking gigs, print book contracts, Fortune 500 consulting, etc. So, I'm shooting in the dark.

But if money is the goal, a monthly fee may deliver more over the long run. Books lose momentum.

All awesome ideas +rep. I am still working out the logistics of how to price properly for subscription vs. just the book itself. I'd like to hear more from WFers about what kind of pricing point seems fair for the book+ subscription site that allows you to get updates, sample common forms and contracts, and ask questions of an IM lawyer privately

What about some help with recovering monies owed to you by non-paying networks? What are some legitimate strategies that may work (if there are any) to force a network to pay you when litigation is out of the question?

..With that being said, I definitely think this should be a membership site. You could offer the book content for a one-time fee, but then you could also offer the latest case law, and commentary related to that case law in a VIP area of the site for a monthly fee.
Yeah,I think the only way I'm going to be able to include sample contracts and letters like this and keep the updates coming is through some sort of subscription/membership site, that will be an optional upgrade for book buyers

Next question for everyone, what style would you prefer for such a legal guide: 1) A less-formal, wandering overview of the online legal landscape that would be read from start to finish (e.g. like a novel)? Or more of a single-use reference book, that you just look up specific legal subjects and read each one individually, but not in any particular order (e.g. Like the XYZ for Dummies books).

Thanks

A hybrid between the two!

I vote for a novel-like structure. Something that you can read from start-to-finish and by the end have a good idea if what you're doing in AM is legal or not.

I think this is a big one. If there is a component that gives people basic guidelines on negotiating in a payment dispute, beyond just keep nagging your AM, I think that would be a good addition.

Tips for negotiating contracts and knowing next steps legally that are options for escalation would help affiliates who run into payment issues.

As far as style, positive and negative examples seem to go a long way.

Your outline is fantastic! Good luck.

fuck that.

I woud like an ebook which gets directly to the point, with a solid TOC for quick reference when you are on the run literally.

ehhhhh, if you are literally on the run I doubt an eBook will be the shortcut you need to keep yourself out of trouble. It sounds like you would need a real lawyer at that point

What I'd like to get from the book: A solid foundation and understanding of the law in the first place, so I don't need to constantly second-guess myself as to whether or not what I'm doing is legal. Sure, a lot of this may be common sense, but a lot definitely isn't.

If shit hits the fan because I have no understanding of the law (which I could have avoided by studying the things I can and can't do), then I'll buy a lawyer. Not try to scurry up the relevant page and hope it saves me. Although a hybrid certainly doesn't sound like a bad idea.
