On the firing line
For the first time in my life, I think I'm in love with a car. I drove a ES 330 the other day and can't stop thinking about it. One of the quietest, smoothest, most comfortable rides I think I have ever experienced.

I know Lexus' reputation for longevity and comfort, but I what I'd really like to know, are there any hidden problems that you don't usually here about? Or, are they really as reliable as they appear to be?

Some of the things I've heard: 100k + mileage cars that run like new, others that have over 400k on the clock and still run great, never any problems, etc, etc.

Would like to hear from actual Lexus owners.

I had a GS300 a few years ago. Loved that car. Never any problems. I don't know how good the newer models are.

A fun fringe benefit of owning that car was I would get invited to paid encounter groups every year. Various marketing companies would pay $100 or so to spend an evening viewing and test driving new models.

Ive been looking at a 460 for some time...

Hmm. I can only seem to buy a new ES 350 here in KC, their site doesn't even have a 330 on the drop-down menu.

Anyway, looks like a sweet car, quite affordable and yes, toytas have killer longevity & resale value. Might look at one of these myself in the springtime.

I had a 2004 sc430, car was awesome, I still have a 2005 rx330 still a great car.

ES350 is a nice car.

It's not a new car. I refuse to buy new. I'm one of those guys that would rather let someone else take the initial hit in depreciation. This is a few years old and "Certified Pre-Owned". Looking at Kelley BlueBook values, they seem to hold their value quite well.

This particular car looks brand new. Since I'm not familiar with Lexus body styles, if a friend was driving it and told me it was a 2011, I'd believe him. It's that nice. Everything works, just had the Lexus 60,000 mile service done, brand new, or almost new tires.

Basically, I'm trying to come up with a good reason to *not* buy it, only because I've never been this excited about a car. My fear is, in my excitement, I'm overlooking something.

Prior to test driving this car, I was looking for an "old man" car: Lincoln Towncar or Mercury Grand Marquis. Then a friend suggested I look at Infinitis, so I drove a Q45. That's a damn nice car as well. The ONLY thing that I didn't care for was the driver's seat. I couldn't get it adjusted exactly right, and it was a tad on the small size (I'm a big dude, okay, I'm short, but I'm wide). After driving the Infiniti and the Lexus, I don't honestly believe I could settle for American "luxury". Both the Lexus and the Infiniti blow away any American luxury car I've ever driven. Performance, comfort, quiet, all the things I want. Which left me wondering about the quality and longevity.

Thanks for the input guys. Didn't help talk me out of it, but I guess that's really a good thing. :D

I had a 1997 sc400 back in 1997 and the only thing wrong with the car was that it was too smooth, too quiet, too wonderful - my wife loved it too. I mean it was an incredible car - put a few hundred thousand miles on it -no problems. Fast, performed well, amazing really.

Do it. Between my mother, sister and ex we've had several Lexus vehicles in our family over the years; all have been top notch. One is a 1998 LS400 that is still going strong with more than 150k miles on it, never needed anything more than routine maintenance and minor bits and pieces one would expect to come from that kind of wear and tear (I mean mainly cosmetic stuff with the upholstery, scratches and dings from road wear, etc.) They really are some of the best-engineered cars in the world, and the luxury vs. the price of the competition is worth considering -- ie. to get a similar or superior car from one of the European manufacturers, you're spending substantially more out of pocket, and more down the line for maintenance.

I'm really glad I posted this now. It's nice to hear that Lexus is a product that lives up to the hype. At least amongst this crowd, and we all know how brutal WF members are to products that don't live up to the hype.

Thanks guys!

I had back to back jaguar s types (2003, then 2008) new. They have an amazing shock system, its almost like riding on a cloud of air. I think the s-type was replaced with the xfs and its suppose to be similar. If its within the same price range and I think it is, try one of those out. Very expensive to maintain though (as im sure with the lexus) :-/

lexus = poor mans mercedes

skoda = poor mans lexus

Call me poor then. I'm too old to care about "baller" status or what someone thinks of my car.

Think what you will. Judge people based on their car. Overspend to get yourself something that makes you feel good.

I'll sleep well not caring what people think of the vehicle I drive. It's just a car. A mechanical thing that gets one from point A to point B. It is not an extension of your ego or penis, despite what you may want to believe.

Thanks to everyone else that had something constructive to say. I got the answers regarding reliability I was looking for. So, at the risk of Censoring a thread, I'm going to close this one and let it sink to the bottom of the pile.
