Well after about 2 years my business is starting to grow offline. I haven't even made a push to go offline, but just from word of mouth several brick and mortar companies have approached me to do business with them in the past few weeks.

Since I always hid behind my computer, I never needed business cards, a logo, a letterhead, etc. I do now and I suck at being artistic, so I was hoping I could get some recommendations for places you guys have gone to get company logos designed in the past. I don't really have an idea in my head of what I want so I need someone who won't mind popping out a few different ideas for me before I choose which way I want to go.

jon got the wickedfire logo through a contest at sitepoint... contests can be good if you don't want to spend a lot or are looking for up and coming talent.

the no fail way is to seek out a reputable graphic designer with an impressive portfolio full of logos you dig.

I am not even a member at sitepoint. Wouldn't they get pissed if I signed up and my first post was a logo design contest? Just out of curiosity, do you know what prize Jon offered?

Yep, I second the 99designs option. Most people holding contests have no posts. You can get quality work for cheap and you get to choose from tons of options.

If you don't want to gamble try alexbet.com. Have not (and would not ) used anybody else in the past 5 years.

What's a fair prize amount for a contest like this? The guy nickycakes recommended has some good stuff in his portfolio and charges $145.

There are a bunch of WF members who are pretty decent when it comes to logos. I guess it really comes down to the size of your budget and the look you want.

Gary Simon = amazing designer, fair pricing, but doesn't focus on logos, he's more web design/dev than logos.

Ben = started in logos, high priced, but you'll get a really good product

GLP... nah, just kidding.

Tyler Lemeuix = Does okay in logos, he did work for us a few times, always did a good job I thought, pretty low pricing, turnaround time is a coinflip (depending on what he's got on his plate).

Barman = He's pretty damn good when it comes to screwing around with Photoshop. I don't know what his prices or work is like though, so you'll have to ask him yourself.

Shit.. I know we have more designers here, but I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head.

Contests are a good alternative if you want to play the field, but more times it becomes a ROYAL pain in the ass. I consider myself VERY lucky to have scored the kid who made the WickedFire logo on the first contest, because I've seen lots of other contests go from ehhh to blehhh.

They have a formal "marketplace" and I believe they charge to post there; so it's not like your posting in a regular forum like here looking for a designer. You post what your looking for and budget, and youll get a good amount of submissions from designers.

Typically $125 - 225 for a logo only. I know that's a broad range but basically at $125 you'll probably get around 40 entries and at $225 you'll get closer to 80 entries. Of course that's ballpark numbers but I've had a few contests over there and that's about what I've seen.

With a logo contest, you can typically get a business card design for free by whomever you declare the winner.
