Anybody here have an M.B.A or considered going for one? I know some of you guys are in school still (Nickycakes is going to Harvard, right?) and I'd like to get your opinions.

Thanks,

PM

I just graduated as well and I've definitely considered an MBA (I took the GMAT), but at the moment, unless AM goes terribly wrong, it's looking less and less likely. The sorts of schools I would want to go to send everyone onto Ibanking and consulting, which is what I'm getting away from with my internet marketing anyway, so what's the point?

Consulting doesn't sound like it would be such a bad gig.

@Kair0s: Did you move straight into AM after school, forgoing the dreaded job?

Regarding consulting as a "bad gig," you're right, compared to the average job, it's great from a pay perspective. It's a ton of traveling, though, and there's absolutely no hope of getting filthy rich quickly, because no matter how smart you are, you can only be promoted so fast, and you're not working for yourself.

I'd had a job lined up since November that I got from on-campus recruiting. It was going to be in an executive training program in the e-commerce department at a prestigious American retail brand. It was meant to start in August. I started AM in January, got lucky in lots of ways, and called the company in July to tell them I wasn't coming. There's absolutely no way I could look back now, obviously from a financial perspective but also from an experience perspective.

I figure if things go terribly wrong, I'll apply to biz school in a year or two and tell them about this crazy industry-- but that's not my goal :D

I'm just finishing up my masters in computer science, been doin it for 3+ years...also have a business undergrad degree...I started it before I got into AM and probably would not start it again if I had already began doing AM before

A masters degree is nice to have but it really depends on your goals...if you want to be an exec at a big company it certainly will help but if you plan on being an entrepreneur than there really is no need

Graduated from Georgia Tech with a Business degree. Was thinking about getting an M.B.A. but it's useless in this industry.

Useless in most industries.

MBA Path:
Age 22: Graduate with BA
Age 25: Work for 3 years
Age 28: Graduate with MBA
Age 35, finally work your way up to middle management/VP office. Spend the next 10 years doing the exact same thing, sitting in the exact same meetings, not watching your kids grow up.

Non MBA Path:
Age 22: Graduate with BA
Age 22-50: Start own business, eat ramen for 2-3 years, stockpile cash, employ lots of people at good wages, retire at 50 a proud and happy son of a bitch.

If you like meetings and bullshit dress codes, get the MBA man. If you like independence and gun slinging, go your own way.

I don't understand...do you mean you will be sort of pidgeon-holed?

I think he's making fun of most of the test questions / examples in business curriculum since they use made up companies selling "widgets" as it's the theories their teaching or testing, not a product line.

Amen!

Depends on the situation. You really don't learn alot from B School, especially if you were a econ/bus/accounting major. Alot of lawyers, engineers, doctors etc go since they didn't take those sort of courses in college. Its more of a place to network with other smart people that you can.

If you are doing pretty well in AM I would ride the wave of success as the market is still strong compared to other industries, school will always be there but in 5 years the AM landscape will be totally different. Milk it while you can.

Study something else than Business, pleeeaaaase.

I hate business majors with a passion.
Useless, useless pisshats who tout knowledge anyone can learn in a few months (the parts that are really needed for a business).

Got a degree in psychology and computer science and would never think of doing it another way.

My point:
Go through a cool major and learn biz on the side (by experience, books or as a minor). University / college / whathaveyou will hone your mind enough that the business stuff you need can be learned easily.

My major is Business :(

always thought about Psych though, but it's even harder to get a job or decent-paying job with it.

Dr_Ngo, what job prospects did you have after graduation?
