I agree its no one ever made any money with there apps, it was all a marketing ploy.

I've never tried it, but there's software out there that makes what you're talking about possible. If I could be bothered I'd do something like this:
1. Use automated software to add multiple friends/day across multiple facebook accounts. Ideally they'll be somewhat targetted, and there's an app out there that can add friends based off of what groups they belong to.
2. Use automated software to post regular status updates advertising XYZ.

I'm not endorsing it, but this guy "created a program" that is designed to monetize a Facebook social network.
Brian Campbell (the guy) supposedly gave John Chow the first $10k he made with it in only 16 days to pay it forward.
I looked at a couple of the pdfs he put out and the basic gist of it is: find your niche, either create a group or co-opt one related to it, post a lot and become a recognized authority - all the while adding friends with the similar interest to your social network. Every once in awhile post a link to a (your) content site that has aff links on it and profit.
