Manging your own server... resources?

For self managing your server, any resources you guys recommend? Mostly concerned about the securing of my servers.

i use Platinum Server Management, Inc. - 24x7x365 cPanel Server Management for all my servers.

They are super quick and can handle just about anything 24/7. It costs about $5/month per server. They also do online monitoring and if your server goes down they'll immediately do whatever it takes to get it back up and working then send you a report of what went wrong.

look at the libraries at both linode and slicehost, they cover basically everything you need to know about managing a server

If you have to ask that broad of a question, then just go with a managed solution. Think of a dimwitted 17yo blond repairing the car her rich daddy bought her, when she doesn't even know how to use a clutch properly. That would probably be you managing a server.

Unless you're willing to seriously put in the hours to learn what's necessary, get a managed service.

why anyone would want to do their own management is beyond me...that is if you are an IM. i totally get linux geeks/ppl into networking but updating php/mysql fucking with iptables etc is not something i want to concern myself with when trying to make money at the same time.

I've used platinum before...They were awesome. Basically what deliguy said is 100% accurate from my experience too.

By using iptables I was able to skyrocked my profits and satisfy my wife AT THE SAME TIME
