anyone ever use manta? i don't know how it gets its data, but it shows the owner of a business and estimated revenue, employees, etc..

i use it a lot to creep on seeing what kind of revenue some business are pulling in. However i have no idea how accurate it is, i'm assuming not 100%

but it is usually broken down to segments .. like <500,000 1-2.5 million 5-10million etc...

I've been using it a lot lately to check in on some local used car dealerships, also thinking of going into this business myself. all the dealers near me are like 1-2.5million, and larger ones are like 5-10million

i have to think it can't be that far off,. anyone know any more about it? or used it?

PJ, You don't stay #1 in the info game for fortune 1000 clients for decades by making up random ass numbers.

In another life I had full access to the D&B data of a city I sold Financial Investments in. I knew things about the biz owners I was cold calling that would turn them white if they knew...

That's awesome. Now allow me to repeat what Papajohn just said - the numbers are self reported, so the accuracy is completely at the will of the business.

who are they reporting too? the IRS?

i can totally see a business making half of their money as cash and not reporting it, i assumed that anyway

He's saying that D&B is self reported. Meaning it's not a reliable indicator of company revenue.

lol
it uses telemarketing databases.
They get the figures by calling up the company and asking a bunch of questions about it until someone hangs up on them. We love lieing and making up crazy stuff for my retail company so I got some really interesting listings in there. hahaha
The company that maintains this db is called InfoUSA.
They sell a cheap telemarketing software you can buy at like staples. But then when you get it home you realize its just shareware and you can't actually use it without buying all the databases. They make up all sorts of shit to get you to spill your company info but they always show up as infousa on the callerid so its game on whenever they call.

alot of times the business owners don't even know.
They start with the simple info and move their way up until people realize they're getting data collected.

It's like Hello is this (business name) ? Are you at the address of (address)? Who's your manager can I talk to him? Hi (managers name) i was thinking about heading in there, what all do you sell there? Are you guys fairly large? How many people work there? etc etc.

So it takes awhile before they realize they're not talking to a customer. So i'd until managers get used to the quarterly calls and start catching on their data is usually pretty accurate.
