winamp is better than VLC because you can skip tracks while it's in the background i haven;t been able to get that wokring with VLC i think there is a mod to do it though that i did in the past
Media Player Classic is what I use, but then again I really only use it for video. I don't listen to music much outside of random Shoutcasts

AIMP is pretty much like Winamp in it's early days. Winamp is very bloated now, AIMP is lightweight and is skinnable/looks good.

KMPlayer is the hidden secret that few know about when it comes to media players. I like it much better the VLC and it plays everything also.
And when listening to music you can instantly trash crappy songs on your disk with the shortcut CTRL SHIFT DEL which is a very useful feature.
