Microphone suggestions?

The dog snuggie contest has kind of re-sparked my intrest in making videos. I'm looking for a suggestion on a decent mic for normal voice work. Any reccomendtions? I don't want a piece of junk, but don't want to break the bank. Maybe say <$250?

not bad at all for low end mic. Your audio quality will easily be 10x greater than the stock mic that came on your laptop

Some of the Blue mic's are very good. I'd go with a Neuman U47, but that's just me.

Of if you're wanting to spend a little less, a Shure SM57 is the old standby for recording mic's.

If you want a plug-n-play mic for podcasts just make sure it has USB output.

Shure SM 58 is what most singers use for live vocals. Fairly cheap ($100ish), but good quality IMO.

I use this and the SM 57 for instruments and get decent quality recordings.
 
I do voiceovers and when on the road I use the AT2020-USB. I've done stuff that ends up on TV with that one... Works fantastic.

+1 for SM 58, very solid and versatile mic.

Having said that, I don't know anything about mics. It's just the one everyone seems to recommend universally, and I have one and it seems to do a great job.
 
Thanks for the recomendations. This will give me a good place to start doing some more digging and hopefully pick one of the recomended ones

I would not use a dynamic mic for speech. I use the Studio Projects B1, which is a decent condenser mic. You need to buy an additional amp, but if you want radio quality speech recording, you need to buy a proper mic.
 
Some of the Blue microphones are good for the price, like the usb mic's above. But you can do better, and feel cooler. Do you have an audio interface or a mixer with preamps? I would recommend checking out the Shure SM7B
 
Not trying to hijack this thread but could anyone recommend something for game recording? Planning on doing some in-game reviews and commentary. My original plan was a Blue Ball, wondering if there's a better option.
