Might be getting ripped off

OP is beyond retarded. He deserves to not get paid.

Fuck you OP. You can't charge for shit that you said you'd do without disclosing a price. And then to make a thread of this shit? It is mind-boggling. I've taken losses because shit was not properly discussed. Why? Because I value my reputation and I understand that referrals are huge. Congrats OP, no one reading this thread would ever hire your faggot ass. And no one your client knows will either.

Next time, act like a man from the beginning. You can't have a sex change mid-way through a relationship.

And tell your mentor he is retarded and to use a giant black dildo until he fully converts. This closet faggotry is annoying.

first do some wooosaaa meditation to chill out. Then go back and read everything I've said so far. You'll see that your comment makes no sense.

Thanks everyone who's been giving me advice. There's been a lot of great points that are making the situation clearer for me. So, I appreciate the feedback.

I'm gonna delete it Monday night if I still don't get any response by the time I'm ready to go to bed.. I'm gonna give him the whole day to respond. Then I'll let you guys know how it goes from there up until I get paid.

You also have to weigh the reaction to your hostility of deleting it. If you have had a good experience with the client so far and are only now having trouble it may be in your best interest to "give him one" if he could be a source of referrals.

To be in business is to be completely aware of your surroundings of yourself and your client. To be able to see things from a detached perspective, flying high above all the bullshit and looking at it with no emotional baggage. Only then can you have clarity.

To summarize if you are building a client list and a portfolio it might be worth it to have something to point to even if you wont get the desired amount of compensation.

Ok, site is secured.

Now he's trying to basically rip me off and get the whole job for $250.

This thread delivers. Especially, this this piece of the puzzle.

3k-5k? That's awesome.

I asked for $150 and found a guy on oDesk to do it for $40.

I knew that was really low but I guess since I don't know how to do it, how long it would take me...etc I'd save myself some grief in case it takes me forever or mess it up.

I think that if I do it myself I can be more confident to charge more in the future, and then delegate the heavy work out and make any revisions needed after the fact.

Srsly OP, be glad he's willing to pay you the $250. Take it, chalk it up and move on to finding the next client... Or continue onto post 350 of your daily WF Journal entry since 2009.

I also stumbled on a cool idea.

I have a friend who is a professional web designer. I decided to let one of my clients know that I have this friend, and that I can ask him for design advice for an hourly rate since design isn't my strong point.

That way I can 1. learn from a professional web designer 2. provide professional quality work and 3. benefit a friend.

It's a win-win-win! :D

1. I didn't hire anyone to do the site. I did it all myself.
2. I actually over delivered on what he asked for.
3. I like to post in my journal. Sure, I've yet to make millions but I can't beat myself up about everyday over it. I just have to keep moving forward and not let my stupid mistakes stop me, or let comments like these discourage me. So if you see me as a slacker, that's fine. I'll post about my success on here within a few years and it'll be a huge source of inspiration for those who read it.

We never established terms like that. Although, if he were unable to pay until the next month I'd be understanding and patient in that case as long as he let me know.

I spoke with someone else I work with who's done business with this guy and he hasn't paid them either. Basically, he's already left a bad impression of himself for some people working infusionsoft and now with me.

And apparently he's started this same project 2-3 times before.

Wouldn't he typically have 30 days (the terms), or so, to pay the invoice?

I'd take the $250.00, and write the remainder off towards 'experience'.

Good luck.

Thanks.

It's hard to settle for less when I worked hard on it, you know?

I already emailed him saying the price isn't negotiable. I'll have to wait and see what he decides.

I wouldn't take the money. It doesn't matter that you worked so much on it. Take it as a bad experience and learn from it/improve your client radar. I turned down so many clients just by the way they were writing the emails.
If you don't need the money, don't take anything ! It's the best choice for both of the parties.

Regardless of what he decides, you just fucked yourself out of a potential long-term client, and also maybe some word-of-mouth referrals.

He's a douche. I wouldn't want to work with him or take his referrals. Birds of a feather flock together.

Who wants a client like that long-term?

From what I have read, it seems like this client is the type of person who goes out and hires multiple freelancers to do the same exact project, discarding the freelancers as he goes and refusing to pay because of high prices etc, always looking for that imaginary person who will move mountains for pennies, and never paying anyone he hires along the way for the work done.

I've seen this a lot, and people like this are cheap scammers. They prey on people who don't require at least half-payment up front. And cheap people like this don't advertise other people's services.

OP, my advice would be to get as much as you can - even if only partial what you agreed upon, and never work with this guy again. Since you were able to delete the site from his server, he can no longer be said to be stealing from you, and since you have no written terms you don't have any way to force him to accept the work and pay for it.

Take this whole situation, regardless of outcome, as a learning experience with the key lessons being: 1) always have written and agreed upon terms/contract, 2) always get at least a partial payment up front if you will be investing a lot of time in a project, and 3) always keep pre-production/demo files on your own box, not the clients, until paid.
