So it's time to upgrade my monitor situation. I'm looking to get two, probably in the 20 - 22 inch range. I'd like to keep the budget around like $600, so about $300 or less for each. I have this thing about symmetry, so I'm probably just going to get two of the same kind.

If you have a nice monitor/monitors, what kind? If you're planning on upgrading, to what?

Currently I was looking at something like this: Samsung 2253LW 21.6" Widescreen Glossy LCD Monitor - 2ms, 1000:1, 1680x1050 (WSXGA+), Black at TigerDirect.com

Disclaimer: Yes, I'm sure there have been threads like this in the past. You try doing a search on WF for "monitor" though.

Thanks for reminding me about that. Seconded. I've used the glossy screens before too, but yeah, never for hours at a time. Anyone have one of these?

Regarding the Samsung, it seems like the reviews were pretty positive. Thanks for the link. Looks like the only complaints they had was the brightness (zomg it r 2 brite!!one) and the tilt...though judging from the pictures it looks like you can adjust it to be completely vertical (which I prefer).

@abhorrent, Yeah, Dell monitors do tend to be nice. They might give me 9-5 office job flashbacks though. Also, you linked to the same Samsung we were talking about, not a sharp.

That's like saying Honda is nice, but I swear by my Porches and Lamborghinis. :P I'd kill for a full array of high end NEC displays.


I agonized over a new monitor purchase for some time with around a $600 budget. I considered going with dual 20 inchers but found that all the 20" monitors of the quality I was after were over $400 a piece so I decided to just get a good 24" widescreen, a Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP. I like it a lot except for a weird issue with reds being too high contrast. I'll probably get a calibrator anyway, though.

Eventually I'll get two 2007FP's to go on either side of it.
 
I got a Benq that is shiny. I dig it. I can use it for extended times but I turn down the brightness. Benq has nice monitors for the most part. But most of the above are good too.
 
Any reason you guys are getting 22" and not 24"(full HD) ? I'm looking to get a monitor too, but I would want to watch HD movies on it too.

Anyone have a good 24" monitor?

I'm using a Samsung 226BW that i bought my wife for Christmas - doubles as TV. It's fantastic to work on and watch movies. The high gloss is just fine.
 
It is amazing that we now talk about monitors the way we used to talk about hard drives and processors. Investing in a monitor and a chair beats buying the latest and greatest processor for the hard core computer user.
