Hey guys,

I have this idea in my head for a quite long time. I am living in the capital city of my country, and I have been living here for my whole life. My family is here, my friends. There is something to do all the time...

I am thinking about move to some Village, really small. Buy a small house there (which will be even cheaper than my flat here) and start working. No distraction - what would I do there? Just talk to old folks or catch foxes in woods?

I imagine that as in the Social network movie, when they worked from that house in LA (not sure)...

What do you think? I am always trying to find a way to work more - or better. Some days I even not start my computer, even I am fully working IM, not other job or money from parents.

I would be glad for any thoughts guys!

Meh.

1. For gods sake don't buy a house right off. Rent that bitch.
2. Distractions are probably mostly in your head. You will just replace them with other things such as gay webmaster forums.
3. Everyone is different, but I for one feed off the energy of big cities.
4. The fact that it's the same place that you grew up might be the biggest problem of all. Your mental outlook is shaped by those around you and the people you spend the most time with. Family is wonderful, but most are not entrepreneurs and don't get it. They can seriously drag you down if you let them, even if they don't mean too.

I think that your problem is you struggle to motivate yourself / procrastinate too much when working from home. Moving to another home is not going to solve that. I am exactly the same and I solved it by getting a place of work. As it goes my parents own a small business so I got adesk in there. I had other offers though. Maybe you have a client that has some desk space? Point being that you need to be able get up and go to work... That way you get to work, actually do work and go home.

1) I ment to rent, my mistake.
2) Yep, thats the biggest concern of mine. Level of my procrastination is huge and I am just trying to find a way how to beat it.
3) We are probably talking about different sizes of cities. Even I live in the capital city, population here is nearly a half million. Yes, I can imagine living in really huge city can have that "good "stress" smell of everybody doing something".
4) Thats my point right here. Nice to hear more people got this...

Thanks a lot for your opinion man!

Hmm, it looks like we are on the same boat. This is why I move out from my parents. First I lived in 1-room apartment and I procrastinate most of the days. So I move to 3-rooms apartment, so I have my own room just for work. It did help a little, but not too much.

This actually can be the problem. I have even no problem to rent some small office somewhere here, there is no too big budget problem for this. My concern is that I will NOT BE GOING there. I go there few times and then I stop. I will not make myself going there...

I know it sounds silly, "everybody needs to work", "if you cannot make yourself go to the office, you dont deserve the money"... I know these words, but I know myself. I work like this for about 5 years and I know (or am worry) this will happen. Any ideas how to make myself to do it? Dont you have some tips? Not just "dont be lazy", something really helpful, maybe what helps you to get everyday on pc and start working.

Any thoughts would be perfect guys!

It's hard for us to say... The only one that can help you is yourself. I will say that eventually I found myself a business partner. Someone who maybe is not as technical creative as myself but who has good organisation and business skills. Best thing I ever did...

When you live in a village you appreciate the city and vice versa.

I wouldn't think too hard about it, nothing's permanent, if you're in a situation you can move and you think you want to, then go for it. You can always move back.

If it's something you want to do, and all you're doing is renting, why not?

Try it out for a year and see how you like it. You might miss your friends/family and want to move back, or you might enjoy the village.

OP from how you're describing yourself it sounds like you don't have the discipline to be a self-starter or an entrepreneur/solopreneur. That's not a bad thing... many people can't sustain the level of focus required to perpetually keep your feet moving forward. If you think it's bad now, wait until you have any sort of money stored up and you start living a more comfortable life. You'll be useless.

My suggestion: take a job for a year or two. It will help you settle in to a rhythm and get put some cash in the bank. Just go and work in an area of tech or online marketing that you're interested in, maybe at a local startup or something. I've started a number of businesses, and in between each of them I've done something else (worked at a nonprofit, traveled for a year, and did a university degree) to hit the "reset" button.

Getting into a set schedule and rhythm can help you prepare for the next solo run. If you can't solve your discipline problem the only difference you'll find in moving from Bratislava to Snina or wherever is that you'll be procrastinating alone instead of procrastinating with friends and family around.

Quite possibly the worst thing you can do when looking for inspiration and motivation to progress is to distance yourself from those doing it.

You need to connect yourself more within the city and embrace what it has to offer not the opposite!

Everyone else said it but they're right, there is no magic bullet. If you aren't productive in one location simply moving to another isn't going to help anything because you'll just distract yourself with different things.

Thanks guys for all your thoughts, I can see you went through similar problems...

And you are probably right. It is not about the place, it is about myself... I need to do something with my concentration and procrastination.

I am already making some money (about $6-7k/mo), and from project that dont me to take care of them... So yeah, the problem is that I used to some lifestyle of doing nothing. But now I want to move forward and it is hard to work for me - harder than I remember when I started with nothing in my pocket.

I even thought about start writing a blog. Or start some Thread here. I saw some, make it as some "challenge" for me. Write every single day a post about what did I do. I think it will be hard to write 5 days in a row that I did nothing :D

But one more time, thanks guys! I really think you are right and moving is not the smartest way now.

Moving isn't going to solve your distraction problems. Only a combination of tactical and strategic methods are going to solve that.

A tactical example I use: Using the program Freedom to turn off my Internet access for an hour so that I remove distractions in the moment.

A strategic example I use: The room I work in and the computer I work with only have the things that I need to work and as little as possible that could become a distraction in the first place.

location would be an issue if you are living with your relatives. i sugges gtfo your parents house. that will solve your problems first hand, all that noise must be removed

admitting that you are a pocasinator is a first step, I myself is one, an addict gamer but i used it to motivate myself, only after working by 8 - 5 as a reward when you finished your work. you have a different set but its basically the same thing. turn that procastination into a reward then start from there
