I really liked West Palm Beach. It has kind of has a west coast feel to it like SD or orange county. Really nice mall and apartments for the lifestyle it sounds like you want.
Coming from CR though? I don't even...
I'll check WPB out, thanks.
Coming from CR; you can't escape the empire man. In Roman times, Rome is the place to be. I don't like the way power structures work, but given how they work; I know where I want to be within them.
I will recommend the WPB area also. I hated Tampa and St Pete. Felt like I was in a ghetto area with jar heads. I cant recommend the Miami or Ft Lauderdale area either, crowded, too busy and felt trashy also.
Yeah, you are right in general regarding the people in those areas. But I LOVE how pretty it all is, the weather, cheap rent and... Tampa/St Pete have more to do on a weekend. I don't need 1,000,000 people I like around me. If I can find a few, I'm happy. Generally though; I don't have time for much anything aside from work.
Also, having people with high un-employment around me is good; I plan on hiring
Key West isn't an option for sure. I grew up there and its not what you are looking for...
Ft Lauderdale is probably your best bet, for a younger lifestyle. Real Estate in Florida has taken a major hit since 2008 so you might still be able to find something on the intercoastal cheap'ish. But water views and just being closer to the water always raises the cost. So it wont be cheap, really. So you most may be farther from the water than you want. The area is VERY diverse inland of the water. Expect to find restaurants and shops from pretty much anywhere in the world.
I used to live on the water in St Petersburg which was really nice. I just lounged in my hammock and watched dolphins from my back porch. BUT the central west coast of florida is pretty much full of poorer people and red necks. My social life while there was HORRIBLE and options for going out were just as bad. But most other things were pretty nice while there. Expect to find no young working professionals. If your looking at St Pete your only option is NE St Pete, the rest of the area is horrible. I lived at the Snell Island Apartments for 3yrs.
Boca Raton was nice, I went to college there. Its mainly rich old people but since there is a college there it has a small younger population of twenty somethings. Since the rich are there you will have a VERY nice whole foods (i miss it) and lots of trendy places to go and shop. Since the students are there you will find pubs, bars, and coffee shops to hang out in. You will not be able to find anything on the water for sure, but the beaches are pretty easy to get to by bike or car. Old rich people don't go to the beach so its just college age kids. Win Win as far as the beach goes. It also has a decent number of working professionals. I would consider living there again.
Awesome info man, thanks.
Wow! I grew up in Islamorada!
OP - Check out Delray Beach. Sounds like what you want. If you want to be on the West Coast, maybe Siesta Key... its mostly ghetto or old people over there though.
I'll check it out for sure, thanks man.
I like St. Augustine, not a lot going on there, but I dislike crowds, traffic, crazies, etc. Not far from Jacksonville airport. There's good golf nearby, history, etc. Oldest city in the US.
I'll check it, thanks man. I'll report back with more when I visit. I'll be going on the 28th. I'll rent a car and a hotel room. Then drive around to possible condos/apartments I find online.
I agree with Delray Beach. I'm about to list a great little place for sale. 2 Bedroom 2 Bathroom about 1000 sq ft with a 1 car garage.
It's a townhome so no yard to cut.
10 minutes to the ocean (I've got a boat for sale too if you really want the Florida lifestyle).
Real Estate is still pretty cheap here after the crash, you'd be well under $1000 per month and own it! Renting sucks.
Thanks, but I want mobility. I might buy one day; and prices in FL are tempting as fuck. But I just hate the idea of being tied to a place. I mean, if prices drop, I'd have to hold on until prices go up. And management, maintenance costs and taxes can eat the profit of a rental property right up.
I know it is in my interest to buy for tax reasons; but fuck do I want to stay liquid. I truly believe we'll have a decent size market crash in the next 5-7 years, which should make for a great buying op for those with cash.
fuck man that's ridiculously cheap. A 1 bedroom in a shithole town here in Alberta would cost you more than that.
Why aren't you all IM'ers moving to Florida is my question?
Other priorities? For me no state income tax (I deal with tangible products), good legislation, good weather and a good connection hub for airports (being close to MIA, DFW, JFK, LAX is important)
That's insane. A friend just signed a lease for a new place in Boston. $3400 / month for a tiny 2 BR apartment. Granted it has its own private roof deck, but still.
I sometimes forget how expensive this city is.
Yeap, my two cousins live in major US cities and pay $3-4k/month for a one room in a decent part of town.
I cant comment too much as I dont live there, but I know a lot of people for some odd reason jumped into going to Tampa the last 10 years.
Gotta mean something, most of these people were condo people that had homes in other areas of the US too.
When I go to Florida, I always stay in Destin though.. but then again I don't live there.
I'll check it out, thanks eliquid.
$569/month 2bed 2bath right by the beach in North Miami. The only catch is $640/m HOA fees lol

not bad... nasty way of distributing the price, they should make it a single number; people will more easily accept it. Oh well, not everyone understanding marketing; better for me.
Tampa's a pretty good place to live. Cost of living is cheap. The nightlife is active. We have two big Airports, sports teams and a few great beaches. Pretty much have it all here.
Yeap, plus, if I want a real city, I can always get a cheap flight to NYC/San Francisco/Dever for a weekend get away.
Lauderdale by The Sea. Great community!
Thanks, I'll check it out.
Consider if you need to fly back and forth between CR. If you do then you'll want to live in a place where you get CHEAP flights back and forth.
Yeap, airport access, not only for CR, is super important to me.
