I listen to audio books that actually teach and motivate while I work. Music does fuck all.

Personally I find trying to concentrate on an audio book and work at the same time is too distracting. Very much prefer music for background noise, and I find it's a lot easier to tune out when needed.

I listen to music and podcasts doing light thinking tasks but when I'm reading or writing or having to concentrate then the music goes.

Definitely cannot listen to music and work at the same time. My brain just feels annoyed that it cannot put it's full attention on 1 desirable object.

Depends on the task at hand. Programming I find music really helps me get into the zone, but if I come up to something complex, I end up turning the music off.

I also struggle to listen to music when I'm writing copy.
Makes sense, I think music is better for more grindy type of tasks, but both of those are more creative kind. Am I right in saying you come up with good ideas in the shower? If so, it's probably cause the noise is similar to white noise. For the more creative tasks, I'd probably switch to white noise (although some people don't like that).

There is another way - hero music.

Hear it, and you KNOW you will rule the rankings (at last until next update ;)

Usually go to these when stressed or have a long night ahead:

Photek and Boards of Canada in the background works good for me if I'm grooving with work

Like others, if I really got to dig in I might go silent, but then I can hear my ears ringing which is also distracting sometimes

If death metal pops up on the playlist I usually get distracted and have to go play drums for a while

Can't listen to my usual stuff while working. Thrice, Rise Against, Chevelle, and the like just isn't that great for maintaining focus.

It's primarily Mogwai, Godspeed, God is an Astronaut, and similar instrumental post rock stuff.
