I'm still using a CRT monitor. Would an LCD help? What kind of lcd do you guys recommend for this? Are there any special features I should look for if I'm going to be staring at the damn thing for 10+ hours a day?

I am not sure what type of screen my laptop has but I have been on my computer all day and my eyes are fine.
It is a brand new hp laptop, if that helps at all. The screen is really bright and crystal clear.

hmm does having the lights off make it worse? Anyone else have anymore advice? If it will help I'm gonna order one tonight. I feel like i'm gonna fucking go blind!

yes, lcd is much better than crt. And keeping the room lights on high is best. easiest way to burn your eyes out is working in a dark room in front of a monitor, even lcd.

An LCD should reduce the radiation quite a bit. I use a 19 inch StarLogic and its easy on the eyes, with clear and sharp details. I didn't have to break the bank for it either. For now, you might try turning your CRT monitor slightly to one side to minimize the direct stream of 'x-radiation' into your eyeballs.

Another thing you can do is increase your refresh rate. If your CRT monitor is set at 60hz, it can get pretty irritating after a while. You can change it in your display properties, settings, advanced, monitor tab. 75hz is a comfortable level on most CRT monitors.

Lastly you can always back off the contrast which will ease things a bit, especially if you are working with bright backgrounds such as word documents.

I just remebered something that you can really do to make things better with the monitor that you are using now.
Put a lamp or anylighting behing the monitor, that way the room is still lit but you dont get a glare off the monitor. Back when I had a monitor like that I used to have the same problem but then I just turned off the overhead light and put a lamp behind my monitor and it made things much better.

What's the refresh rate on your CRT? Right click your desktop > Properties > Settings Tab > Advanced. Under the monitor tab you'll have the refresh rate. If that's not 85 hertz or more, change it .... and if it doesn't go that high, your monitor is old and sucks.

Besides the refresh rate, your eye level should be at the top of the monitor. I take the stands off my CRTs and lay them flat on the table. Follow all the advice in this thread and things will be 100% better.

Went to Wal-Mart and got a 22" ProView. It was only $278 :\ I might return it and go with that Samsung on newegg though. Will running the monitors recommended resolution also help? My video card sucks, but if it's worth it I'll upgrade.

PS: This thing is fucking HUGE! I was using a 17 inch crt, wow this thing's like twice as big no joke.

1. eyes on the same level as monitor
2. any LCD monitor
3. refresh rate
4.all lights on!!!
5. try to wear glasses (I've heard there are special, for such cases as staring at screens for a long time)

I went from a 15" CRT to a 19" LG Flatron LCD monitor, and it helped somewhat, but laptop screens feel way more comfortable.

Yep take it back cos Wal-Mart are evil :disgust:

I haven't gotten it yet because I just ordered it and it won't be shipped until the 15th. *tear. I ended up getting the duo core 2.4 ghz which I'm sure is going to be awesome but didn't do the quad because it was a lot more.
