My friends daughter died unexpectedly

That's some bullshit about your view on doctors. They bust their ass 24/7 to save people. They get calls every hour of the day/night for emergencies to SAVE people.

That doctor has probably been saving patients for DECADES... one child has severe complications and simply cannot be rescued, the family is in denial and all of a sudden make it their mission to avenge the death of their loved one by ending the career of someone who has dedicated their life to saving people.

Have some appreciation. If it IS the doctor's fault... the course of logic and fairness will prevail. But don't turn the baby's life into a sour occasion by trying to play the hero, jumping to conclusions and questioning everything that happened.

It sucks... I agree... but let the family handle it as they choose. Its their issue not yours.

That is some level headed advice. While I do not have direct experience, it does seem malpractice suits are often out of frustration rather than actual avoidable error (not saying that the OP's is, just in general). My career is a lot less noble, and when I fuck up I don't have to worry about someone dieing/lawsuit. Like you said, he probably has a lifetime of amazing life saves, but cannot be perfect everytime.

@Jason - Sorry for your loss :(

There has to be something wrong here or some sort of malpractice done by the doctors or hospital.

Well, I do not trust any dr or anyone from the medical
field. I am going to look into as much as I can and do some investigating.

But...
Wow, sorry to hear,

I do not have full details but I have been told her throat closed up and her lungs filled with fluid.

Fuck you for already putting the blame on the doctors. You don't even know what the fuck happened. You don't have any fucking clue how hard these guys need to work everyday to save or better lives.

Sooner or later you will have to visit a doctor (what's the chances of going 80years without seeing one) and I am sure you will be glad that he's helping you.

I am sorry for your loss.

As of blaming the doctors. Try to get your thoughts in order and a level head first. DO not confuse "routine" with "easy". Yes, tonsils are removed routinely. No, it is not an easy operation.

Stay by your friends. They need you right now more than they need your anger.

::emp::

Totally agree with what emp said. My 6 year old son had his tonsils and adenoids out last month, so this thread gives me the chills.

But what is with the immediate leap to malpractice? Obviously you are upset at the moment, take some time to chill out.

Try to mourn rather than lash out.

@Gumby

Chill dude. Some people may not have the same "avenues" to vent their frustration as others. Writing down your thoughts and clicking that "send" button can relieve a lot of stress, regardless of any "replies" or "sympathies".

Now that I've grossly "overused" the "quotes" thing, I'll bow out of this thread. But bashing somebody in a thread about a 2 year old they knew (the NEICE of a CLOSE friend really ain't that far away) doesn't seem too classy itself.

Agreed - a lot of my friends are doctors, and everyone of them is totally and utterly committed to doing their job, in tough conditions and with limited resources (NHS in the UK - obviously I can't speak for the US).

People these days don't want to accept the fact that we are all frail and mortal. When people die, or are told that the disease they have just isn't curable, a common reaction is to assume that the doctor must be to blame in some way.

The enthusiasm for suing doctors which started in the US and is making its way over here, is becoming a major threat to the life of people who need their care.

This encourages the practice of defensive medicine. Rather than focussing on healing people, it makes medics focus on covering their asses.

Going into hospital is actually a pretty dangerous thing to do (there are many studies that show when doctors go on strike for a short while, death rates go down). The only way to improve that is adopt a no-blame safety focussed culture, where every incident and mistake is reported in a way that others can learn from. This is what the airlines have been doing successfully for years, and it's a practice that would save hundreds of thousands of lives if hospitals did it.

But they can't. Why? Because there's always some piece of shit lawyer looking to make a buck by turning a family's grief into anger and suing the doctor involved. To admit that things could have been done better in a particular case would be tantamount to professional suicide.

If the hospital made a major screwup, and was grossly negligent, then fine, complain and sue them. But if they didn't and it was just a tragic event, be aware of the effects your actions could have on the future care of others.

EDIT: That said, anger is a normal part of the grieving process. But please let it pass before you make any decisions.

My friend almost lost one of her sons with a tonsillectomy. He had a reaction to the anesthetic.

You want to stay out of hospitals if at all possible. Mostly because of infection. You go in there to get knee surgery and you can come out with come out with an infection that will kill you. (Usually Staphylococcus )

HEALTH / High staph infection rates in hospitals stun public health officials / New study reports lethal drug-resistant bacteria widespread

"It is estimated that each year 2 million Americans become infected during hospital stays, and at least 90,000 of them die"

This is my greatest fear, as I'm about to make a trip to the hospital in the next month. A girlfriend of mine went in to have her baby and almost never came out due to Staph infection.

Very true, although my father is not a "surgical doctor" he gets those midnight calls as well. I know the feeling, and I agree with you trig.

I actually almost died from Staph when I was 19. I thought I just had the flu and eventually went to the hospital after like a week.

It was noted in my medical records I was allergic to penicillin guess what they gave me to make me better and land me in the ICU for a week.

I understand accidents, complications and tragedy happens in life. However looking into all the information and the death rate being so low it is real hard to come to grips with on this situation.

Doctors are to quick nowadays to remove things. Give you drugs and shoot you up full of vaccinations. It is really not their fault that modern medicines spews nonsense and pushes horrible ideals down their throat all through medical school. Basically drs are brainwashed and people think what they say is GOD.

I am the type of person who will question everything in life. I also believe that a DR is a human being and the way the Companies they work for treat them is unfair. The information they get on certain situations is always manipulated to sound better.

A perfect example is the HPV vaccine. It is being marketed to prevent cervical cancer when in all actuality it prevents less than 1% of it and the link between the vaccine and other complication is higher than that.

There are so many reasons and resources for people to look into now.

There are so many outlets and ways to get information.

I am trying hard to not turn this into some ugly political debate about medicine.

You aren't trying very hard when you make generalized, ignorant, nonsensical statements like this:

Basically drs are brainwashed and people think what they say is GOD.

Cut out the douche-baggery - it seems pretty clear you're now turning the death of a two year old tot into a personal tirade.

OPEN. YOUR. EYES.
and grow up

Don't confuse Doctors with Pharmaceutical companies, or the bureacrats who run public health campaigns

Doctors = on the whole, hardworking professionals dedicated to making people's lives better

Pharmaceutical companies = lying, untrustworthy organizations ruled by the marketing depts, financial directors and demands of the shareholders. You only need to google Vioxx or Cox-2 inhibitors to confirm that.

I'm as in favour of class action suits against pharmas as I am against suing doctors.

Most Doctors distrust the pharmas as well, but they don't have a whole lot else to work with. Although I have to say the US model where it appears the more operations hospitals do and the more drugs they prescribe, the more money they make doesn't seem conducive to good medicine.

As to Dr's being brainwashed.... that's just offensive ill-informed bollocks. All the ones I know are far more cynical about medicine than any layperson. Certainly none of them think they are god.

This is a very sad story and is hitting me and my friends family extremely hard. Apparently my best friends brothers daughter had to have her tonsils and adenoids removed.
She was a beautiful 2 year old girl.
I got an IM from my best friends girl friend telling me she has past away. I am not sure how everything happened. How does someone die from such a routine operation. I looked up the death rate for this procedure and it is 1 in 250,000. That is a .000004% death rate. There has to be something wrong here or some sort of malpractice done by the doctors or hospital. I am so upset about this right now. How a child so young can just be gone like that. From something so simple.

That's terrible. I'm sorry you and the parents are going through this.

Man, I was supposed to have my tonsils removed within the next month, now I'm a little concerned. Uh, I've definitely changed my mind.

My brothers girlfriend was hospitalized for a while after giving birth to my nephew because of a Staph infection.

-- Everything will be fine, with you and your baby. :) What's the sex? :)

My prayers for all involved.

You never know what end of the statistics you will fall on, always extensively research if a procedure is needed, not having it done is less risky than having it done, and alternatives.

The medical field wants to cover themselves, even if it puts us at risk. They also like bringing in the big bucks. No one will care about your safety more than you......MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS! The medical field can be life saving like making sure my son, Bob won his fight with cancer, but I had to go against doctors a few times when Bob went through treatment, because they weren't putting his best interests first.

Seconded. It's not like the thread title made it sound like there were going to be all kittens and rainbows in here.
