So I've got what I would call a "big idea". It far surpasses my abilities in programming, design and investment level. I'm guessing it would cost about $5k-10k to get this "big idea" up and running.

I don't want to share my idea, for fear someone will take it and run with it. On the flip side, I don't have the resources to create it by myself. An NDA would be helpful, but most likely useless unless I'm sitting down in a face-to-face meeting with my potential programmer or investor.

So... I've got this great, big idea and nowhere to go with it

Suggestions?

For the inevitable worselessfire suggestions on the way like, "yeah, give me your idea" or "I'll make the site for you if you give me 99% of the profit"... :thefinger: all you worseless bastards in advance! haha!

Suppose I do raise the money... you recommend going to a local web company and having a face-to-face? Hopping on guru.com or elance.com? Contracting out to someone over the internet? I'm nervous about anything except a face to face for fear of having my idea yanked out from under me.

Unless you all have a fool-proof plan...

File a patent and copyright. Perhaps hire a lawyer. And only hire people in the USA because if you hire someone outside USA the copyright laws and patents won't do you much good should your idea be stolen and duplicated.

I don't think it's "patentable" because you can't patent a business process or model. It would be like trying to patent the idea of MySpace or YouTube or Forum Topic... It's not a physical product it's a website idea.

theres only three options that i see.
1) freelancer+nda+loan
2) freelancer from india+nda
3) buy a good programming book.

NDA = Non Disclosure Agreement

They sign a form saying they cannot share, divulge, or use the information you talk about regarding your project that they wouldn't have already known or pursued. It's a contract saying they won't steal your idea!

$5k to $10k is not much money at all for a "BIG IDEA" you should EASILY be able to secure that with CC or a line of credit from your local bank or credit union.

You can find people online you can trust but it's hard to know "who". I would suggest finding a goood programmer online and splitting up the tasks between 3 or so different guys if you want to try to keep it ultra-secret. If not you can always do local + nda but expect to pay a shitload more for local work.

You could also do what you mentioned is find someone on this forum or another WM forum someone you trust and maybe would be interested in going in partners with you and your idea for some profit. They may have the resources you don't and even if you give them xx% you are going to make more than if you didn't finish the project.

that doesn't sound very secure though, they can just walk out and make something slightly different to yours, and say they already knew about it right?

Actually they are patentable.

For $5k-$10k definately go with a credit card. No reason to give someone a big share of the company over that much. Worst case the idea completely flops, and doesn't make a penny you should be able to pay that off in 6 months to a year no problem.
