On the firing line
Just finished LOTR.

Did not realize how much shit they left out of the movies. After the movies ended, there was a whole 'nuther story about the hobbits... Peter Jackson sucks.

Anyhow...

Looking for another novel. Fiction preferably. Detective stories, military, historical based, fantasy, whatever.

I read a little of everything.

Suggest a book!

I think you'd like this, it's short stories, but they are all about war.

@Ice - cool, haven't read any decent short stories in eons. Nobody writes them anymore.

@hehejo - I keep hearing about "Atlas Shrugged", will prolly check it out.

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm not a huge Tim O'Brien fan, but as far as getting a sense of the day to day insanity that must come with fighting in a war, his Vietnam stories are great. Lots of dark humor, and you'll never think of lemon trees the same way again...

The moon is a harsh mistress
Atlas shrugged
The fountainhead

^^ Fucking right. TANSTAAFL

I started reading Song Of Fire and Ice because I just finished writing a novel and now I want to read more popular fiction to improve my novel writing chops. I think it's corny as fuck, but it is still entertaining.

Catch 22
Enders Game
Brave New World
Rum Diary
For Whom The Bell Tolls

Some of my favorites. Can't see you being disappointed with any of those.

Fiction?

If you like Scifi - The Dune series by Frank Herbert (don't read the crap by his son Brian)

Also, Neal Stephenson's "The Diamond Age"

Stephenson also has another great non-scifi book "Cryptonomicon"

Garet Garrett's "The Driver" is one of my absolute favorites.

Kafka's The Trial

An amazing fictional story. But as all great literature, profoundly reflects the human condition, the world in which we live and how it works. In the case of this book, it reflects on how the powers that be exert their power over ordinary people, and the psychological and emotional consequences of that exertion.

After having recently been mistakenly informed that I was on the MATCH/TMF list; I feel all the more endeared to this book.

Also, if you haven't already read it; 100 Years of Solitude. Amazing book on how society evolves and devolves; as well as exploring topics of isolation, motivation, love and pretty much all aspects that touch the soul.

Catch 22 is probably my favorite book, I laugh out loud reading it, even after reading some of those scenes several time over the years.

There's always one part of that book that stuck with me since the first time I read it:

"They are going to kill you if you don't watch out, and I can see now that you are not going to watch out. Why don't you use some sense and try to be more like me? You might live to be a hundred and seven, too."

"Because it's better to die on one's feet than live on one's knees," Nately retorted with triumphant and lofty conviction. "I guess you've heard that saying before."

"Yes, I certainly have," mused the treacherous old man, smiling again. "But I'm afraid you have it backward. It is better to live on one's feet than die on one's knees. That is the way the saying goes."

"Are you sure?" Nately asked with sober confusion. "It seems to make more sense my way."

"No, it makes more sense my way. Ask your friends."

Good stuff.

Briar Rose by Jane Yolen
Dune by Frank Herbert
Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein - forget the fucking complete shit movie.
Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter
The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter
Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson
