What are your thoughts on not using enough anchor text variations in your backlinks? Any rule of thumb you work by when determining the anchor text to use when building your links?

actually yeah and great question! there is a rule of thumb. 50% primary keyword 50% mix of your secondary keywords. I've been doing it that way since about 2003 and it's never let me down.

I have another newbie question that's been bugging me for years but I've never done anything about it. I usually install wordpress using Fantastico, this results in the domain not having the www. - is there a way to add the www?

I'd love to know.

when fantastico asks you for the domain (it'll put it in there for you) put the www. For sites you've already done it for login to your wordpress and go to the general settings then change the url from http:// domain.com to http:// www. domain.com

Do I need the exact headers from his type of host/server (in this case GoDaddy) by getting him to send me an email from that domain (or one of his other ones on the same host) or will a general GoDaddy email header with the IP/email addresses swopped out do?

I'd recommend taking an actual spam email. Godaddy uses domain keys and spamcop.net might be proficient enough to recognize them.

I need landing page that will do good with food coupon offer on PPC. My campaign was shut cos of direct linking for 4 months.
Should i just copy merchant landing page and put "click here" button instead of their email submit button?

If the advertiser is tight wad enough to not allow direct linking they probably aren't going to allow you to copy their landing page with a click here button. There's a lot of advertisers you can do that with and they don't mind but without knowing what advertiser you're talking about in this case my instincts say no.

ooo loaded question. and unfortunately as much as i love ecom sites I've never made any sort of post that talks about how to promote them. So you caught me there

Google product search first and foremost

It's free and it'll put all your products up on negative rankings (the positions above or highlighted within the serps).

If you have money shopping.com

ebay the products with a buy now of the same price as on your site but with free shipping and promote the crap out of your site on the listings.

Then of course there's the traditional channels.

Great thread Eli - I have a question about leaving a footprint for G for a couple of my sites. If I set up a couple of mini nets as follows:

Health niche - 10 mini sites (on 10 c-class IPs) linking to a health money site (on a server in a different country)

Finance niche - 10 mini sites (on same 10 c-class IPs as health mini sites above) linking to a finance money site (on same host as the health money site)

The health and finance networks DON'T interlink anywhere. Is the fact the two networks are using the same IPs likely to be found as a footprint and penalised by the search engines?

Heh no I mean grab a piece of real spam mail. Not from them. Someone else. Then modify it to look like it came from them.

Ah ok my bad I misunderstood. Yeah that works good because the familiarity between the landing page and the advertiser tends to raise converting rates. You just gotta check with your AM first to make sure it's allowed. I've been told no on several occasions so I make a happy medium and fit just the color scheme.

Great thread. Thanks for all the tips. I have a couple sites I'm working on I could use some guidance on.

Site 1: Starting to rank in top 10 for a lot of the keywords I'm targeting, but not sure how to monetize traffic. Adcents isn't cutting it and I'm brainstorming what to do to monetize it. Also, about half my traffic comes from Google images, have you had any success monetizing that traffic?

Site 2: Offer converts very well for the traffic I get, but I'm having a hard time ranking it. I'd like you to look over the site structure and competition and see exactly what I should do to improve the sites ranking.

If your still offering tips, I'll PM the sites to you.

This works because while bitly redirects don't have a very big effect on the rankings and quickly dissipate in their importance, but they bring a ton of spiders from all the dcs and will force a reevaluation of your site's relevance in a fairly short time. New popular blog posts and news articles tend to get a lot of bitly links quickly.

After tanking a site over 2 weeks ago and not getting much love from G in getting it back, I'm going to try this.

If it works, I'm buying you a beer next time I'm in Roseburg!

damn that is a noob question - you got balls asking it so I'll answer to the best of my ability: Just got into wp-admin and in settings, set the url of the site to use www. Also, just to be safe, you can add this to your .htaccess so it automatically redirects and google knows for sure which version to index:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

You can still pick a simple and down to earth structure such as a "Twitter News" stucture (basically a site that takes your keywords and monitors twitter for those keywords and displays those updates) or something along those lines so it'll be quick n easy to put up and still have the keywords.

I have a few (longtail) product sites where I wanted to add this to increase the content. This isn't a wordpress site so i'm looking for another way to add the twitter searches to my page. Anyone know of a plugin to do this?

On some of my websites I keep getting ?phpsessid appended to my affiliate links and I can't figure out how to stop this. I can get rid of it, but the next time a visitor without cookies enabled clicks through, it shows back up. After that, every time someone tries to click through, they get a 404.

On one of my websites I disabled W3 total cache and solved the problem, but I tried the same thing to another website and it didn't fix the issue.

I've tried this in my .htaccess:

php_flag session.use_trans_sid off

php_flag session.use_only_cookies on

to no avail.

Anyone know how to fix this problem? I'm missing out on monies!
