I'm not an admin and I am a hardware newb.

I have a modem that runs to a wireless router. I have a Windows machine I am using a USB wireless card to grab signal from. Can I take an ethernet cable and plug it from the windows machine to another machine and give that one a line? How would I do it?

Thanks!

Just plug your other machine into the router, there are ports on the back of your wireless router to do that.

Yeah, should have mentioned my router is downstairs in a corner and to run a cable to where my machine is would require... too much. So I am wireless.

Guess I could just bridge my connection.

Or just pick up another wireless card for the other comp :p

I could, already went through that. Fedora (well any linux distro) isn't very friendly (plug and play) with that stuff. Requires all sorts of drivers and BS. Easier to use windows as a gateway I think. Plus I have uses for both OSes at the same time or I'd just use partitions instead of separate machines. So I need both up anyway.

It's called 'Internet connection sharing'

right click the network connection ( to view the network connections right click on network neighborhood > properties? )

click on share

Blah blah blah It'll go about setting up a DHCP server on the other network connection so all you should have to do is just plug the other one in.

two things to keep in mind when connecting from ethernet card > router / switch / modem etc your using what's called a patch cable. To connect two comuters together with out a device in between your going to need what's called a crossover cable. If your not sure if you have one then google there are ways to visually check it.

You'll proabbly run into IP address issues if you do just manually set them and make sure that the first set of three digits 111.222.333.xxx are the same most common 10.0.0.x or 192.168.0.x If going this route set the gateway to the computer with the wireless connection.

I understand what he wants....

You want to hook two computers up via ETHERNET cable.

What you need is a "cross over" cable.

The pinout on each side is different

That'll allow two computers to commuicate.
