new "cheap" tesla

Deliveries start 2011? That gives you less than one year to drive them before the world ends.

Nice looking design!

Now to wait for a cost comparison of gas vs electricity\occasional battery replacement...

Ya, that's awesome, I'm going to look into it and see what I can find. If I find any good relevant info on it I'll post back here.

I want a cheap one of these,

zap zap!

Looks like it's time for me to take my name off the reservation list for the Roadster and on to this instead. I wonder if they bump you further up for it.

That said, the site says it can seat 7 and that it has more payload than a station wagon... HTF is that possible considering that it's physically smaller than a station wagon, and in none of those photos can I see anywhere you can fit 2 more people without having to fold them in half at the waist?!

But yeah, hopefully this means that next on their development list is a Tesla station wagon. I'll jizz in my pants at that announcement.

Zimok: Try teslastuff.com
Goes to an ebay store, but has some nifty shit.

I always wonder about battery life on these things. I figure its like a cell phone. After about 300 charge cycles it will only last for about 150 miles instead of the 300 miles when it was new. Whats a new battery cost for that thing? Hopefully they recycle cuz a couple hundred pounds of lithium-ion can be bad in a landfill.

A couple things most people don't know about lithium ion batteries. If you discharge them all the way, they lose their ability to hold a charge. Car manufacturers like Tesla have systems in place in the computer systems to prevent this. As long as you pay attention to that, the batteries actually last a long long time. Take the iphone for example. That's why it has that 20 percent power warning and tries to shut off. As long as you do that, the battery life shouldn't degrade for quite some time.

oh, and yes, the batteries in both Tesla models are recycled when they reach their end of life.

Yea Tesla's a great EV P.R. device, even if only 1% can afford them.

The dead body accommodations; standard five passenger configuration with the addition of two fold-flat, rearward facing seats for children.

The GreenCar.com review points out that the base price is for the smaller 160 mile range battery pack, I hope an extension coard won't blow a motel room fuse.

For contrast, here's an electric 1973 VW thing.

People are actually interested in buying these? I think I'd rather pay the premium for gas. Wouldn't you miss the sound, feel and speed of a gas-powered car?

Yeah... would miss the roar of the engine... until you take off in an electric car.

This seems pretty slow though... electric cars have no engine to rev up so it puts out maximum torque from the get go, should have a pickup of 0-60 in like 4 seconds. I see the better model does... this must put out the horsepower of a 2 cylinder or is heavy as fuck.

I saw them test an electric car on Top Gear that was 0-60mph in under 4 seconds, but it was an unreliable POS. I dunno, I'd just rather have a petrol car that did that speed personally.

Starting at 49k? I'd rather pay half of that for a used 540i and spend the difference at the gas station.
