OK, I'm looking at getting 2 new dells.
One for father-in-law - he knows how to surf and get emails that's it
Kids..need faster machine for some basic gaming

Do we get Vista or get the downgrade of XP for $49/machine?

What are your thoughts. All the machines we have at the house now are XP.

Oh and what video card for the kids.. their young so i don't want to spend a ton on the graphics card.
Dell offers
Radeon X1300
Radeon HD 2400
Radeon 2400 XT
Geforce 9300 GE

Thanks again

If you can, wait a few more months until September when windows 7 will be out.

Vista isn't nearly as bad as it was when it first came out, and with Windows 7 around the corner just stick with Vista for a few month then jump on 7.

If your hardware is powerfull then I'd say go for vista, anything under 1gb ram then xp is for you.

Have they mentioned what the support for the upgrade of vista to windows 7 will be like?

The folder structures messed my xp to vista upgrade up so just did a format.

As for video card, you best choice in that list is the Radeon HD 2400.

I don't think it's really worth the extra $49 extra for each machine for XP.

As already mentioned just save the money and upgrade to Windows 7 later.

If he's just surfing and emailing, then consider Linux. Dell has a desktop/monitor package with Ubuntu for $398.
