I need a new desk. It's past time.

Nothing out there is built to suit my setup; I use three monitors, one in landscape two in portrait, which takes up a good bit of space.

To the right side of the screens I have a macbook, and on the left books, magazines, whatever I'm currently drawing, notes, etc.

I don't like drawers, do like space and clean lines.

Can anyone recommend some sick looking or highly functional desk designs? I'm going to build my next one, so ideas would be awesome.

(might grab this [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-Digital-SE50UY04-50-Inch-120Hz/dp/B00BXF7I9M"]Amazon.com: Seiki Digital SE50UY04 50-Inch 4K UHD 120Hz LED HDTV: Electronics[/ame] to replace the screens if I get the desk done cheaply enough - anyone tried it? I figure I can offset the cost a bit by selling my screens and with the baby coming we won't be headed to CR as soon as I expected so seems like a reasonable investment)

Now that is a good idea. I could probably do something pretty slick with a pair of old doors. I'll have to poke around HfH this weekend.

Thanks!

Consider hiring a furniture maker for a custom job!

Too much $ for me I'm afraid. I've $1900 in my budget for the rest of the year. That'd be sick, though I definitely want to do it myself if I can, I enjoy what little time I have to build real world things.

I doubt that TV would be a good replacement for your three monitors

Ya? I'm torn. I'd love to be able to have just one screen, and my 3 together already take up more width than the 50' would. Gizmodo gave it a solid review, but I can't find any normal users who dev to ask about it. And it, along with the desk, will blow my entire office budget for the rest of the year so I have to be sure.

Do you have thoughts on why it might not be good? Love to hear any ideas.

TVs aren't built for someone sitting 3 feet away from them, I feel like it's going to fry your eyes. Plus, do graphics cards even support 4k resolution yet?

I would wait if I were you. You're not going to be able to drive that TV at any reasonable refresh rate with your current hardware.

From the Amazon reviews...

"HDMI 1.4 is bandwidth limited to 30Hz while at Quad-HD/4K/2160p resolution.

Frame Rating: High End GPUs Benchmarked at 4K Resolutions | PC Perspective

realistic action full 2160p games will appear to blur or skip frames. console games that display at 1080p will look great running at 120Hz. this flaw is also true of the Sony XBR-55X900A XBR-65X900A XBR-84X900A, because the fastest I/O port to your GPU on all of these models is still a single old 1.4 HDMI port.

Wait for a panel with DisplayPort 1.2 (60Hz capable at 4K) to buy one of these new Quad-HD/4K panels instead of driving four different 1080p LCDs. 120Hz only works at 1080p resolution, and 200Hz at 720Hz - this has been confirmed by multiple buyers of these new LCD's on multiple tech forums and youtube.

No need to wait for HDMI 2.0 since as of this writing - we still don't know what that will be, what year it will come out or if anyone will actually use it. The history of HDMI improvements is a doubling of previous bandwidth, which indicates any future HDMI 2.0 will only be as fast as a DisplayPort is already.

May 30: Asus just announced it's new QuadHD PQ321 31.5" will include a (60Hz@2160p capable) DisplayPort MSRP $3,800."

TLDR: A 4K TV needs to have a display port on it to get 60Hz, otherwise you'll be stuck at 30Hz with current HDMI spec.

On the subject of desks, the Ikea Galant series is excellent. You can make dozens of different configurations. The steel frame is really solid, I can stand on mine without fear of it collapsing. Comes in several finishes and accepts an aftermarket keyboard tray perfectly. Get the T legs, they look better and are easier to adjust. GALANT system - Combinations & Table tops with frames - IKEA

My configuration is similar to this with the dark wood finish... http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29836090/#/S19836057

When I was waiting on my monitor to arrive after building my new computer, I decided to use my 42" TV in the meantime. "Oh this'll be awesome! A giant screen!"

Yeah... I wouldn't recommend it. Having a screen that big was just awkward. On the other hand, it really took porn to the next level!

I have two of the galants, very very solid desk that look really nice.

I can get 3 large monitors on my Exerpeutic Workfit. Join us, walking desks are blissssssss.

Ya, I'm not worried about the 30hz limit. I don't game on my desktop. What little PC gaming I do is on my notebook hooked up to the projector, and for dev 30hz is fine.

Fantastic! Had no idea ikea made such slick desks.

Ha, true enough.

Plus, do graphics cards even support 4k resolution yet?

Newer stuff will. I'm running a 7970 I was given, which will push 4k.

Thanks every body. Gonna figure out my shit on Saturday and either build or order one of those ikea desks I think.

Mine's shittier than this but this is how I'd do it if I did it again:

For me I have 2 chains that come down to support the front while the back is mounted to the wall(in the attic so it's sloped).

At work I have 2x 27" (mac) monitors, can't imagine having 3, and and just a plain maple desk, nothing above the table top. I have a 42" TV hooked up to my home computer but didn't like it as a monitor. I used the shit out of it before megaupload got shut down.
