From the AP, 14 minutes ago...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea's top court has convicted two U.S. journalists, and sentenced them to 12 years in labor prison, the country's state news agency reported Monday. The Central Court tried American TV reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee and confirmed their unspecified "grave crime" against the nation, and of illegally crossing into North Korea, the Korean Central News Agency said.

It said the court — which tried the women from June 4 to 8 — "sentenced each of them to 12 years of reform through labor." The report gave no other details.

The U.S. Embassy in Seoul said it had no immediate comment.

The circumstances surrounding the trial of the two journalists and their arrest three months ago on the China-North Korean border have been shrouded in secrecy, as is typical of the reclusive nation.

There were fears that the two women would be used by Pyongyang as bargaining chips in its standoff with South Korea and the United States, which are pushing for U.N. sanctions to punish the nation for its latest nuclear blast and barrage of missile tests.

The journalists — working for former Vice President Al Gore's California-based Current TV — were arrested March 17 as they were reporting about the trafficking of women. It's unclear if they strayed into the North or were grabbed by aggressive border guards who crossed into China.

Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider did not have an immediate response to the sentencing.

The women cannot appeal as they were tried in North Korea's highest court where decisions are final.

The sentences are much harsher than what many observers had hoped for. The trial was not open to the public or to foreign observers.

Anyone else feel a repeat of previous tactics coming on??? Not saying that's what it IS but you can't help but wonder...

"Quick, how can we get the vast majority of Americans to support us in going after N Korea?"
"Well we can always play the 'oh no, help them!' card"
"Good idea, we can use those two journalists"

Sounds about right.

Yeah, Obama wants to attack North Korea. That's probably the dumbest thing I've ever read. Why don't you have some sympathy for these two women who will be forced to work in concentration camps unless we free them?

Well, it's pretty shitty for those two chics. Just like spending 12 years in Korea isn't enough, they're going to be in PRISON!

Yeah you're probably right, the American government are to much of pussies to attack a country that stands up for itself.

One can have sympathy for the two women regardless of the reasons behind why they're being kept there. Again, I did make it clear I wasn't making any assumptions as to the situation, I only said it's starting to sound a bit familiar, especially when you take into consideration that the US is now considering adding N Korea back onto the list of terrorist states. It's simply something to think about...

Regardless of who is behind it and why, I still feel sorry for the two women. While none of us knows the exact circumstances leading to their arrest and conviction, I've no doubt they don't deserve the punishment they've been given - if any.

I have watched a lot of her work on Current TV, I can't imagine what it would be like to go through this, but fuck....

I hope they will be released through bargaining or heavy diplomatic pressure. They shouldn't be left to rot, but there's probably no need to forcibly remove them either.

Well, it definitely SUCKS for those two ladies. Of course our boy Gore has to be a part of the problem AGAIN! Sheezz!!!

OK, let's see, Gore was having the trafficking of women looked into in China. Gee, it's not like China has any ties to or relations with North Korea, Hmm...

They say that the Cold War was over something like 40 years ago. Let's fast forward to the the last few years and to the present.

China has been depending on the trade with the U.S. to fuel it's new found growth. The U.S. tries it's best to embarrass China over it's handling of the Olympics last summer and made SURE that through it's media connections that entire WORLD heard every single little detail of anything that it did not approve of in order to make the newly emerging China looked bad. Even our boy Bush had to use the games to not only PISS OFF China, but to actually throw down the Gauntlet to Russia about Georgia while we were already militarily tied up in the Middle East with no foreseeable end.

So the stage is set, Russia is now once again SICK of the U.S. rattling it's saber at them, so what happens but U.S. businesses come under attack "Electronically" from that very same area. It's even encouraged by the authorities over there. The Russians are as smart as or in a lot of ways, SMARTER than the U.S. thinks that it is.

China, being pissed at the U.S. but knowing that it wants our business to help them expand has invested in us financially. Then our boy Greenspan finally runs our financial party boat aground and does not care because he knew that he was getting off of it and the Planet quite soon as well. He had his run and got what he wanted so, to HELL with everyone else. This leaves us with a crippled economy that China has a vested interest in now. So, let's see how can they hedge their investments??? Hmm..... Gold and Silver!! Since our boy Carter was so "Wise" as to take us off the "Gold Standard" a few moons ago the U.S. Dollar's value no longer had any real tangible value to back it up. We relied mostly on trade and international demand for our goods to keep our currency's value competitive, which has obviously failed us of late. So China is going to do what they can to stay solvent and if that means helping Russia to sink us financially, why not?! They will recover their funds if they do it properly.

Have we forgotten that China invented Gun Powder and made specialized use of Medicine LONG before us Westerners. So they too have some serious Brainpower!!

The Cold War is still going on, the U.S. is still being assaulted by China and Russia just on a different battlefield. It's our fault for having the ARROGANCE to swinging our DICKS in the face of other countries when they were showing signs of some change and cooperation that has been unprecedented in recent world history. The other difference is that this time we only have about 1/4 of the Allies we had back in the actual cold War days.

Then our boy Donald Kohn is on 60 minutes last night telling not only US to our faces, but the WHOLE WORLD that the way they are going to get more money into the U.S. Economy is to simply JUST PRINT MORE PAPER!!!! OMFG!!! He went on to say, that in "his" ULTIMATE WIZZDUMB that had the government just printed out more money we would have been able to avoid the LAST DEPRESSION!!

Donald went on to say that NO MATTER WHAT, the Federal Reserve was going to keep on pumping money into the nation's banks so that they don't fail. He said that they have already slated another 1 Trillion dollars for this with MORE TO COME if needed. He did say that the banks who have received government funds will need to raise 75 billion in private funds pretty quick though. (He did not say if this was for each bank, or all of them as a whole combined though.) Of course they will Donald, knowing that 1 Trillion is coming their way and and who knows much Funny Money to follow.

I don't know folks, the stimulus package was only suppose to be around 750 billion and it's up to 1.4 trillion. (In just 6 months) The banks have already been given close to a Trillion with at least another Trillion on the way. Then a few weeks ago the Government decides to give the banks a "Generous Leeway" in evaluating their assets. As in, "Oh, you can value your assets at what they were when acquired, or would be if and when the economy recovers". This is LUDICROUS!!!

I know that the average working U.S. citizen has not felt the benefits of all of this money in any appreciable way yet.

What's our budget for Afghanistan going to be since our esteemed leader is talking about the U.S. being there WELL PAST 2015?!

All I can say is, we need to make the money while we can and if possible get paid in Euro's or Precious Metals just to be safe here in the U.S.

Here's a blast from the near past: Russian Ruble

The U.S. Dollar is the focal point for the world's major currencies, but its position weakened in 2002 and the outlook for much of 2003 was at best mixed with at least five variables clouding the picture: (1) global capital flows, (2) the bulging U.S. currency-account deficit, (3) prospects of War with Iraq, and uncertainty regarding North Korea, (4) the Administration's dollar policy and (5) and the strength of the U.S. economy's recovery.

I should NEVER have watched 60 minutes last night, then come in here and see this thread!!

Rant over!!

Deep down I am glad the OP brought it to my attention though.

Sincerely,

MT

Rant over!!

lol wut?

This thread is about North Korea being tool bags, but all that unrelated nonsense you just spewed makes no sense.

Get off Gore's nuts, he's fairly separated from the incident. And why are you freaking out over Donald Kohn? What else did you expect him to say? Printing more money is what they are planning on doing, not scattering fairy dust everywhere.

Maybe you need to drink from your "fountain of knowledge" a bit more, maybe gargle my nards, or something because if you are surprised by the fact that we will be in Afghanistan past 2015 you are an idiot.

I despise people like you who try and segue everything to their craziness. Enough to diagram it for you.

it was stupid to send them there in the first place i would have told al gore to shove his job far enough up his ass that his heart could beat it to death. And kim jong ill is a douche bag

No Oil.

I feel bad for those ladies but I hope they suck it up and make it through the 12 years relatively unscathed cuz I doubt the U.S. is gonna do much if anything.
