Updates

Just to update people on my progress so far.

As Mike pointed out yeah i have got a few things well under way with the glittergrafix site so far. Here is what I have so far -

Keyword Research - initial runs done for the minute

Revenue streams - Im already signed up with NB so Im picking offers at the minute. Adsense and email / list building

I have spent all today learning / downloading DreamWeaver - i am going fucking nuts. I always knew this was going to be the bottle kneck on this project since i have no knowledge or experience of doing this type of thing in the past. I reckon it will another two days before i can get the LP sorted.

Any tips for a noob on CSS and DreamWeave? Should I get my hands dirty or use a free template suitable to the niche?

Cheers

Dave

Bone throwing time...

One of the few domains in that list that isn't going to expire in the next 60 - 90 days is SantaRadar.net

So, why the hell would someone want a Christmas domain in May? Well, to get top ranking for the right keywords by Christmas time, duh! Check this out:

Code:
SearchesKeyword

The keyword "santa radar" gets around 477 searches per day, in the early part of the year!! Imagine how many searches it gets in late October - December. Now, let's look at the SERPs for "santa radar". On the datacenter I pulled up, #1 was NoradSanta.org, after that, there's not a lot of competition. Looking at Google using "allinanchor:santa radar" we see our buddy still #1, searching "allintext:santa radar" shows the number 2 site showing up as number one. So, number one and two are pretty entrenched. It may be tough to knock them out by Christmas, but maybe not. Worst case, with a little work, you'll be number 3.

What does number 3 for "santa radar" translate into money wise? Well, let me throw some rough estimates at you. First, we know that the 477 daily searches it's getting right now are really low compared to what it will be getting, so figure approximately 10 times that for the Christmas season (it's probably closer to 100 times, but we'll be conservative). That means about 5000 daily searches, at number three, you can figure you'll get around 1000 hits to your site.

Now, let's put a good offer up there...like, say...Letters to Santa. I'm not sure, but I think those usually pay pretty well, over $10 per conversion. BTW, PrimaryAds has a Letters to Santa campaign, but the bastards wouldn't approve me. Oh well, such is life.

Time for math...

1000 uniques per day
Targeted offer - converts around 8% (low, but I like to figure low)
Pays $10 per conversion
Equals about 80 conversions per day
Times $10 = $800 per day

Not bad. Granted, it's not going to make that much right now, but you should still be able to convert something. If nothing else, put up a different offer until Christmas time.

Ouch, I remember learning DW long ago. It had a steep learning curve for me. I've always recommended MS Frontpage for n00bies. It's great for getting you up and running and comfortable with a HTML editor, and once you outgrow FP, DW will be waiting. Now, for those of you hissing and booing about Frontpage, remember I only recommend it for beginners. Most people will outgrow it very quickly, but it is easy to use, and that's the most important thing in the beginning.

If you like banging your head against the wall and want to stick with DW, great! DW is a great tool. Just try and learn as much HTML as you can. It will help immensely. If you try to rely on DW's GUI and tools to build sites, you won't really learn how to code, and that will hinder you later on.

So, if you're a REAL glutton for punishment, put away all the fancy IDE's (Integrated Development Enviroments) and bust out Textpad or Notepad++ and do it the old fashioned way. And find a decent template you like at Open Source Web Design. They're free and fairly simple / intuitive.

I'm on.

Installing the latest Wordpress on the server now.

Scraping for images / content & affiliate networks. Should have a rough page up by tomorrow.

I'll take Editorialize.org since nobody else seems to want it. Should be fun to try and develop. Thanks for the great offer Mike.

Ok, so I've got FTP access to proSEOtools.net and... I don't know what to do. I've never designed a webpage before, so should I put in the time to learn with Frontpage or go with one of the free WYSIWYG html editors Mike posted? Wordpress even?

What type of page should I go with? A blog like Matt's or a straight up single LP made to convert an offer(s)?

Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone.

OK - the DreamWeaver learning curve continues. Head is officially melted but i think im making some progress on the landing page. I have got the basic layout sorted just need to tweak and find some actual content that I can rehash and make unique.

Would appreciate all comments on the page so far. A the minute its missing meta tags and some other bits and pieces.

Questions now are -

How can i optimise for seo - are there any widgets / links i need to leave room for?
Adsense placements - Good, Bad or Ugly?
NB banner - I think it works, considering target audience.

Want to focus on the Myspace "glitter" seeking audience so want to target content to females 15-24.

Taking longer than i had hoped for basic design...All comments appreciated

Cheers

Dave

Updates on GlitterGrafix

The DreamWeaver saga continues. Cheers for the heads up on FP Mike - think since ive got stuck into this one and have spent most of the weekend trying to get something together i'll stick with this and see how it works out.

I have a very rough version of my LP about 50% complete. I have settled on a look that i think will appeal to my target audience - 15-24 females, glitter fans - basically the tweeny Myspace market.

Its missing the following (still to be added)

Logo (any designers willing to step in?)
Meta Tags
Email capture (im using vertical response - should i change to aweber?)

I like Matts way of including RSS type buttons - any ideas on how i can add this using DW?

Also any advice on other seo friendly additions to the LP or just general comments about the page so far would be greatly appreciated.

Latest version of the site - Untitled Document

Cheers

Dave

OK, I had a boatload of work to get out of the way but now Im down to only half a boatload.

My plan for the site so far is as follows

Joomla
Rss Feeds
Google Analytics
Adsense

Google webmaster tools/site map submission
Submission to directories/social networking
Limited amount of article content submitted to directories.
Place Affiliate offers for phones/accessories ect
Link to a blog I already own on smartphones.

Find out if competing networks allow ads on the same domain as others.
"" same page
***begin adwords campaign after site and offers are up***

Forum posting about offers
Real world marketing, goal is to make at least one sale in the time alloted if not more.

Obviously these baby steps wont set the world on fire ,but this is all stuff I can get done by myself. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

hazzan, nice!

I'm currently editing a wordpress theme and I've made a very sexy header image for it.

Still on the hunt for affiliate networks. Ebay -> CJ could be a go? But I would be interested in working with other networks that I've found around here.

To add onto hazzans list - places like Topix, Yahoo Answers!, Craiglists even....

Mediastar & blueRAP is having some problems getting down the development side and this will probably be a big stumbling block for noobies everywhere. So, about the html / dreamweaver/ m$ frontpage stuff ... I basically see things 2 ways.

1. You don't want to learn HTML. Ok, Mike's hosting doesn't have fantastico so just Download, skin & learn to use wordpress. It's very easy be up and running in 1 hour and totally free.

2. Learn to hack html. You don't have to be a pro to make a decent looking website. If you have no skills or are very basic, read the following. It will take about 2-3 hours to download and read everything below and get started in building web pages and won't cost you a penny (all software is free). PHP, databases and all the rest will come after you are very familiar with HTML, HTML is a required pre-requisite.

@ Mediastar

That layout is going to be perfect for the myspacers of the world because it gives me a headache. Seriously, I know it doesn't sound like a compliment but it totally is perfect for your user's demographics. The following are my suggestions about the layout.

- Your adsense/jamster placements are perfect
- make the pink colors match
- switch the background color of adsense to something more eyecatching (read: lighter) so it stands out
- add some shimmering pictures

If you don't know much about SEO stuff, here is a 1 hour crash course about the basics.

SEO friendly pointers
- title tags, you need them to have most keywords for that page
- A page for each 2-3 keyphrases (I take it they are your "Most Popular Today")
I- ncrease the number of <h1><h2><h3> tags with sentences about your keyword for that phrase. Right now you only have 1 <h1> and nothing else, that's just not going to cut it.
Don't worry about your header for now, get your pages up and indexed. You will have a fire under your ass to do that once visitors start showing up. For now #1 priority is getting pages up and indexed.
- more real content for each page

@ hazzen ... adsense type ads on landing pages doesn't usually work that well unless you are going for straight arbitrage, those type sites usually are parked pages. The point is, I'm really not sure about mixing this type site with adwords unless your CPC is very, very low.

I might suggest 2 sections of the site if this is your plan. One section for organic traffic complete with aff offers, adsense & content. You should be pointing your incoming links to these pages. Have a different section of the site that you optimize for PPC traffic if you want to go that route, make this look more like a landing page.

BTW: what was your answer to this question? "Find out if competing networks allow ads on the same domain as others.". I've never thought about this and am realizing I have some pages that send competing offers to the same landing domain. Please post answer here.

I'm having trouble finding a good layout for a pink apple macbook themed site. The header image I've made looks great but something that looks professional and is in the same colors (pink/black) ?!?

One question - I love those CSS templates that erect provided. I'm using Wordpress because I'm under the impression that Google loves Wordpress and the pages get indexed really quickly. Would you recommend Wordpress over a generic CSS template, and also - is it possible to convert CSS template to being Wordpress compatible?

Hey if no one is grabbing this bone, I'll take santaradar.net!
After I get done with fantasypinupart.com I feel like I can get anything done. ;)

I started editing my wordpress theme for fantasypinupart.com
Loading it with plugins and and testing. (and no the final version isn't up yet). Getting the look and feel that I wanted along with content took at lot longer than I expected. My PHP skills were really rusty. And I completely underestimated the time commitment to get it working well. But I finally started making traction.
I've signed up for all of my affiliates.
Got content. (images and text)
started creating posts based on keywords that I'll be uploading on a schedule.

So expect to see the version 1 up Monday night and ready for some feedback. :)

Thanks

Here's a tip that a few noobs might find useful.

I posted my link on this thread on 5-22 ... it's now 4AM on 5-26 and I've got 5 pages in the google index. The point of this is that it's not hard to get spiders/search engines to notice your site.

Digging a little deeper ... I still have not done any keyword research but I looked around a little bit with the words in my domain name "content links". Obviously at this point I'm not in the top 100 but looking at the big boys on top of this search phrase it seems it will be quite competitive.

kontera.com ranks #1 with 25k incoming links
Position 2-6 has between 4,200 - 500,000+ incoming links. One of those is to joomla.org (ouch).

Looks like this phrase might be difficult to crack the top 10 but it intrigues me. If there is that much competition it means there are probably a good number of incoming searches, perhaps the world will love my little script. No tools show much traffic for the phrase.

Checking the google adwords tool, I see that bids are only going for 5c per click. Nobody is showing up in the sponsored results section in a search. Perhaps it's just best I buy the traffic. I'm thinking about charging $60 for the script so if I go 1/1200 I break even.

I'm having trouble finding a good layout for a pink apple macbook themed site. The header image I've made looks great but something that looks professional and is in the same colors (pink/black) ?!?

Post the header, it's necessary to match up the theme.

Getting pages indexed with a small site is easy .. see 1st paragraph.

Google loves content, regardless of what foundation you use (wordpress, joomla, xhtml, ...). No platform is better than the other. As long as the pages are relatively lightweight, whatever works best for you is the right one.

Converting css-> wordpress is totally possible, here's a bam bam thread where he's doing just that. If you don't want to do it yourself, his service seems cheap enough @ $45. If money is tight just pick an existing theme from wordpress or learn to hack.

finding a good layout is a bitch and time consuming. maybe this will help.
it's a pink and black wp theme that's widget ready.

Hi there.

here are a few themes that should do well with the "pink macbook" offer.
You'll have to change the header image, but that should be no problem.

I used the very first on that page for a "pink iphone" site.
Free Themes

This would need some css adapring, probably:
Pinky Theme

Also nice and only header needs to change:
Release of the Wordpress Banksy theme

We have Profit!

Since the domain and hosting, for now, were free, I've made my first profit. 1 single solitary fuckin' click! It came in over the holiday weekend. Looking at traffic stats, I have 60% coming from WF (hahaha) and the other 40% from somewhere else. Anyway somebody clicked a YPN ad at some point.

Profit - $1.24

hahahaha Now to scale this 1 million times!

Congrats Matt! You're the first to make some money! And that means you qualify to purchase your domain if you want. However, if you can make $100 in the next 20 days or so, it's yours for free.

@ atomboy - one domain per person for now. I like the look of FantasyPinUpArt so far. Going the blog route, you could easily add content to that forever. Sample post: Picture by X artist. History of picture, some musings about why it's cool, and a blurb about the artist. Another sample post: various images from a particular time frame and talk about how the intercorrelate, or relate to that moment in time. The possibilities are endless.

To everyone, if you have claimed a domain and have not done anything with it within 3 days, or participated in this thread I will delete your hosting account and release the domain to someone that really wants it. I'm not trying to be a hard ass, just want to be fair to everyone.
