LOLZ! Dumb is more like someone not even taking nuclear fallout into consideration. Dumb would also be assuming that people are equally spread out in the land they occupy and not concentrated in cities.
It would probably only take a few hundred well placed bombs to end civilization as we know it but one bomb could probably bring on a global depression.

Even if you could place the nukes inside the earth's core (lol) for optimal eficiency, you would need suficient energy to acelerate 3x10^24 kilograms to 40.000 km/s (earth's escape velocity).
You would need
1/2 x (3 x 10^24 x 11^2)/ (1^2) = 1.8 x 10^26 J (if I've done my math right - I'm drunk and it's late lol)
One B83 bomb has a maximum power of 1.2 megatons (~5x10^15J)
So you would need trilions of B83 placed in the earth's core to blow up the planet.
Killing all humans would be alot more easy but still hard as fuck.
The "would also be assuming that people are equally spread out in the land they occupy and not concentrated in cities" argument is dumb because even if 98% of the world's population lived on the same city and the remaining 2% lived 100km apart from each other, one still needed to cover all the habitated area to kill all humans. The current number of nukes is clearly insuficient as shown by the previous fancy graphic.
The fallout would help but the winds would spread the fallout unevenly, protecting some areas, as shown by this graph:
Note that some areas close to ground zero were not affected by fallout.
The nuclear winter would also kill many of the survivors, but in the end some would remain.

I think by "blowing up the planet", most normal humans understand that to mean, killing a significantly large portion of the population and rendering vast areas uninhabitable. We don't say that - because it's too many syllables, and assume it to be understood. But for those of you who don't get it, or just really like math a lot - there ya go.

Basically the chart is saying that Russia has the longest rockets but we have more girth and respectable length, therefore we are able to bust hymens better than any other country. Once again France manages to humiliate themselves in comparison and China lives up to the stereotype. India and Pakistan, as if they had to be told, shouldn't even bother showing up.

I think that some people are failing to grasp a very key concept - that of the food chain. You see, if there actually was some kind of nuclear war a significant portion of the human population would survive the initial blasts and fires. HellBlazer, you're probably pretty safe up there in rural Idaho, at least for few months and maybe a few years. But a few things are going to change once a few hundred of even a few thousand fusion warheads have been detonated. Namely, the introduction of enormous amounts of radioactive waste into the atmosphere and ecosystems around the world. Can you guess what will happen then?
Ultimately, it doesn't matter if we have a billion fucking warheads....if there is ever a serious nuclear war we are all fucked regardless of how awesome our missile defense shield is or if we only land 3000 warheads across the Asian continent and Russia gets 4000 on target in the Americas and across Europe.
