Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize?

I neither love nor hate the guy and am pretty moderate in my political views but I just don't get this decision at all. I don't think the NPP should go to the leader of any country waging wars on multiple fronts, even if he didn't start those wars. Just doesn't make any sense.
 


Has Obama really done that much to improve international relations? I'm not political at all, but I thought he's been full of fail. No?
 
LOL WTF indeed, what exactly has he done?

Next year lets nominate Sumitdhawan09 for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
 
The same guy that will meet with Saudi Kings, Dictators, etc... but puts off seeing the Dali Lama.... yea, that sounds NPP worthy.
 
winning this award will bolster his supporters admiration and his detractors criticisms. unfortunately, it will be something that further divides rather than unites.
 
I think it's a great personal achievement for Obama, I just don't understand the basis for him getting the Nobel Peace Prize. He was nominated 2 weeks after he was elected, was it for something he did in the Senate? His very short record in the Senate isn't much different than many other Senators.
 
As much as I like Obama, I don't like this at all. It's ridiculous to give someone a freakin Nobel peace prize based on possible future accomplishments. All this stunt did was make something as majestic as the Nobel peace prize no better than my 7 year old's "Good Citizen" award from school. Actually my 7 year old's was better since that's something he already earned.

I really hate to say it, but Gore earned his doing more than I ever noticed of Obama.

Basically this "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. "

Was it really that extraordinary by comparison of what those have done in a lesser position?

almost seems like they're handing out the prize randomly now.
 
I personally feel that there are a lot more people that are more deserving for the peace prize. This accolade is one of the highest regards of this discipline but it just lost all the value it ever stood for. Now dont get me wrong. I think Barrack is doing a great job, but there are others who do a much better job especially considering the fact that they are not bestowed with the power of being the most influential man in the world.
 
The NPP is not an award just for past achievements, it's actually more of a political pressure tool. The NPP committee knows that there are consequences to awarding the prize and basically hope that by giving the award to a particular person they can encourage certain types of positive political behaviour.

That's why they pick certain people who appear to be much less deserving yet have massive opportunities (Obama) and NOT those who have achieved greatly but can't do any more (Ghandi).

Dangerous game though.
 
I don't think anyone gets this. The going theory here in Norway is that the chairman of the Nobel committee (known for his self-aggrandizement and love of attention) really, REALLY wants his picture taken with Obama. It could actually be that simple.
 
The funny thing is Obama has more than enough time in his term left to actually merit the Nobel Prize, and they want to give it to him now? This is fucking stupid idea.

Like I said earlier Dru, that's the point of the award as far as the committee are concerned - to encourage him to do the right things WHILE he is in his term, not after the opportunity has passed.

Francis Sejersted (the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in the 1990s): "The prize ... is not only for past achievement. ... The committee also takes the possible positive effects of its choices into account [because] ... Nobel wanted the prize to have political effects. Awarding a peace prize is, to put it bluntly, a political act."

Bear in mind though, I'm not saying the award isnt for rewarding past behaviour at all, but that another huge factor in the decision process is the future potential and political pressure aspect.

Anyway, back to rebill spamming and berry slinging - I can almost see my nobel prize already!
