Personalizing the internet connection

I'm doing some research.......
I would like to know when making a business internet connection, is there a way to personalize it? Sometimes it seem like the internet is impersonal and full of illusions (delusions??). How does one keep it "real"?

It's highly possible to make an internet connection with someone who you may want to do business with but may never meet and may not even live on the same continent as you. Generations ago it about a hand shake and a gut feeling (and if all esle failed, the threat of a rifle). So how do you think it works today, in modern times, in the land of the internet entrepreneur?

For me, someone I truly know and trust, making a referal goes a long way. Past that.....I'm lost.

I usually don't do business with anyone without getting a referal from someone I trust and I usually make the first few transactions small ones, that way if I do get burned its not that bad. Aside from that I usually like to speak to people on the phone before I enter into a business relationship with them.

I've stepped out on a limb a few times, making deals and buying services from people I’ve only met online. I feel fortunate that I haven't been ripped off. I do some looking into the person I am doing busniess with though, but ultimately, if I FEEL like they are on the up and up, I go ahead and work with the person.
