ok, so my Maxtor external drive has died.

I have tried a couple of data recovery programs, including:
Diskeeper2008
X-ways Forensics
Object Resuce Pro
nothing works

BUT I think the problem is more that my laptop doesn't even see the drive any more, and an error 10 keeps coming up, which, according to Maxtor means my drive really is fucked, and since it's still under warananty i can return it for a new one... but no mention of the data. :love-smiley-083: (which is mostly my own stuff, but has some not so legally "aquired" software etc etc - leaving it difficult to sent it to some company)

I am sooo tempted to buy another drive, open both up and do some swapping about.

Any one know of any other options?

cheers,

You can always try putting it into an external enclosure. I had the same issue once, and when it was put in an enclosure, I was able to retrieve my info.

I had one of those a few years ago and it went after about six months. It's like I need a backup for my backup. Lucky for me the manufacturer replaced it but I sold it on eBay and got a new one of a different brand. Best of luck to you.

It's like I need a backup for my backup.

After my first Seagate died, I got a replacement from them and a backup to that backup.

I'm glad I did, because Seagate #2 died the other day. The unknown brands I've picked up have lasted without a problem.

I also periodically upload files to Amazon S3 in case everything in my office burns, goes under water, or whatever.
