Mine was a techophone305 (bought out by Nokia) in around 1991. This was short lived and costly as I lost it a couple of months after I got it.

I eventually replaced it with a NEC P4

No idea why, but for whatever reason, those black Motorola flip phones were simply the standard for "working man Alberta" back in the days.

But why do phones have letters? I know it was originally used to indicate the exchange, but why not just use the number you were dialing instead of a letter?

You didn't specify cell phone, so this...

Some Audiovox black brick circa 1996. Actually it wasn't too bad, not too huge, and built like a tank. Drop kicked it into a big mud puddle in a parking lot one day. Took it apart, dried it off, put it back together and it worked great. Can't do that with the shit that's out now.

Some Motorola, similar to OP's NEC P4, ran on 4 AA batteries that gave whooping hour of talk time.

didn't get my first one till i was 21... a nice hand-me-down Motorola M3288
