Preview of Windows 8

STFU.

If you love Windows XP, you'll hate Windows 7 | ZDNet

XP is far superior than Windows 7. Having said that, I still prefer Linux and Mac OS.

Did you even read that article? It's pro-W7 the whole way through...

Those techniques worked fine back in the 1990s, but today, with instant search available just about everywhere in the Windows UI, those old techniques are as dated as a pair of Dockers. If you’re an XP veteran, take some time to learn why the new interface was designed the way it was. Believe me, those designers and usability professionals didn’t just make this stuff up. If you’re willing to learn a few new techniques, I guarantee your productivity will increase over time.

I was thinking of finally upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 so that I could play my Battlefield 2 game again without worry of Punkbuster, but maybe I'll just wait til Windows 8 is out. Or maybe I'll just go back to XP since I know my game works on that one!

Does anyone here know how to subscribe to another user?

One just popped up recently that's going to have quite an entertaining demise...

I didn't bother to read the article. Just saying that there are people who are on the same page as me.

You cited an article from January 1st, 2009 about people using Win7 beta. Some of the points, like the first one about there being no "run" command in the start menu, aren't even valid since there is a run command in the start menu now. Just about every other point is moot because the OS can be configured to work exactly how you want it to, which the author clearly states. You can make it look and function just like XP if you prefer... though I'm not sure why you would want to. So tell us why you think XP is superior?

win 7 is too bloated, the speed is fucking slow, and i have 6 GB ram, still run like shite.
on xp, i never had this kind of issue.

win 7 run command line takes ages to load. for example, when i type 'cmd' on run window, the background process tries to understand what 'cmd' is. what the fuck.

win 7 control panel is shit. why the fuck did they have to change everything.

win 7 is mac wanna be.

bro, you just need to hit win -> cmd and enter and command prompt pops up. you don't even need to wait for the menu to load; just use launchy like everyone else. control panel can still be switched back to the old style.

not even people who use Linux would insist on using a 10 year old (less secure) OS that is not even getting updates anymore or will not be soon. just use windows classic, turn off aero, and change the control panel back, you won't notice a thing.

Still on XP, but Battlefield 3 is going to force me to upgrade. Hoping 8 will be out in time. Any word on release?

been using WIN7 Ultimate since the Beta and have had very few issues with it. To me its the best version since WIN 3.1. With that said its still way more bloated than a MAC or any Linux/Unix system. The thing is, software is written (and always will be) written for Windows first and then modded to work with the other OS's second (at least the good software) For those still using Vista or XP maybe its time to stop using a 7 year old computer.

This whole split OS with Mobile/Desktop WIN8 i am affraid is going to be a disaster. Its not like they dont have the resources to split them and develop 2 OS's. What they should be doing is doing what Apple did a few years back and just start from scratch and build it from the ground up. Do something radical like storing the OS in the bios or some other on board chip and not on a normal HD. Eliminate the bloat and isolate the OS to eliminate Viruses and have the fastest OS possible. I guess I can stop dreaming this will probably never happen with a PC

Yayyy, more bloat.

inb4:

  • Omg, Windows 8 core takes up 40GB of my HD!
  • 3GB of RAM JUST FOR OS OMG!!!!!!!
  • Windows 8 is so BLOATEDDDDDD!
  • WTF! VIRUS JUST MADE TITTIE TILES ALL OVER MY DESKTOP AND BOSS WALKED IN AND SHE'S PISSED!!!!

I dunno where the bloat is that people keep talking about. My computer has only 4 gb ram and is 4 years old. It was bleeding edge when I got it and I've done a video card upgrade in the last year but by no means is it a powerhouse compared to some of the rigs guys around here are running.

I've currently got 10 tabs open in Chrome, as well as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Bridge, Keepass, Excel, Windows Live, Skype, Google Talk, plus Kaspersky and PrevX are running and I don't have any problems with things slowing down. Command line window takes about 1.5 seconds to show up when I open "Run" and type "cmd".

As Blank Czech said, the control panel, and just about everything else can be set to classic views, shown on the desktop, or however you like it.

Are you sure you don't have something else wrong with your machine that's causing it to run slowly?

8 may end up being another transitional beta, following the pattern: me -> xp, vista -> 7. Once you figure out you can sell the same product twice, once as beta and once as release in a separate package, there is no way to go back.

i only have a fairly low end laptop and win 7 has worked considerably better than xp on it. based on that i'm for sure looking forward to 8

I'm actually excited to get this on a tablet... I don't really give a fuck about using it on a desktop though:

It takes 2 seconds for the command prompt to pop up after I press enter. That's no good shit. On XP, it took only less than a second. Something is fucking wrong with Win 7.
