I was misinformed. Apparently his dad was a second unit director on the film. So he ran around filming trees and shit. Still a far cry from directing the film.

The Brady Scorecard for the state was 81 in 2011, meaning it had the toughest and most restrictive gun laws out of all the states...

There is no discussion about social skills, gun laws, what parents should have done that change the underlying fundamental that the kid had some interior issues.
Sad he took lives and dreams that he should not have, but we live in a harsh world with lots of cracks people can fall through. My sympathies go to the families he caused pain and destruction to, there isn't any easy way to understand the what and why of what he did.
