He is a prime example how ineffective "mental health care" really can be though. Better change the cultural environment to prevent mental problems from occuring. And even if that is impossible, one would think that a more suited cultural frame would have the support systems in place to prevent such a tragedy. You might call that mental health care - i call it decency.
The social stigma attached to mental health care in the USA just murders the entire system from the outside in. Not that I particularly agree with the entire approach taken towards mental health here but it is wholly impossible to treat a patient who is (or more often, their family is) too ashamed to allow them to seek the professional help and treatment we need.
The shocking level of cognitive dissonance in the public sphere in regards to medical issues in general really bothers me.
Austism is now a "hot" topic (well, has been for a long time now) and you constantly see advertisements, commercials, movements promoting the acceptance and attempted integration of those who fall within the austistic spectrum.
The day I see a campaign of that magnitude, with that level of openness in reference to let's say, schizoids...I will fucking eat my own hand.
We're largely now living in a constructed environment that may/may not totally mesh with our own biological imperative and which may/may not contribute to these occurrences of mental illness. This just compounds the more basal issue of our genes just don't always pan out the way we want them too, or that one knock in the wrong part of the brain can completely change who you are and/or your ability to function within society at all.
These people are sick through absolutely no fault of their own but instead of the public discussion rotating around what we can do, from a medical perspective, to help these people the discussion centers around Political Topic X that they can now use this tragedy as podium for.
Instead of orienting our public discussion towards any sort of solution we have chosen to demonize the actions of these people and exploit the tragedy and suffering of others for petty political (by that I mean $$$ - except for the retard tumblr feminists) gains.
It fucking disgusts me.
If not for the housing market crash I would have almost definitely ended up UCSB. It is a beautiful place with a wonderful staff and from what I was able to surmise, a great student body as well. I wish them only the best in regrouping and recovering from this and I hope that another tragedy like this never befalls that community, or any other, ever again.
I hope that those who are disseminating their "take" on this for political or monetary gain spontaneously combust.
