Anyone from or near Raleigh, NC? My g/f just got offered a job there and its looking like we might move there. I'm doing research on where to get an apartment but just seeing if anyone has any 1st hand knowledge of the area.

We live around Philadelphia now and so far have only heard good things about Raleigh. Cheaper to live, nice weather, etc. Any suggestions on areas or apartments to check out? Do you like the area?

Also I'll be looking to network with other marketers in the area.

My company is based in Philly and cheesteaks aside, I honestly don't like it very much (then again, I'm from the west coast). If Raleigh is anything like Charlotte, It may be somewhat pleasant and definitely easier on the wallet.

I spend a lot of my time in Franklin, NC (normally in St. Pete, FL) - nice weather overall and much cheaper to live (compared to FL at least). Raleigh is quite a bit east of Franklin, but I bet its pretty similar.

The people are much nicer up there, too...

I live about 1 1/2 hours from Raleigh, and its actually a pretty nice place. Cost of living is a lot cheaper compared to other metro areas. Lots of great restaurants, malls, great schools. I roll through there bout every 2-3 months when I travel. I'm not sure where the best apartments/houses are. Durham is kind of a shithole...might want to stay out of that area

Thanks for info. Glad to hear everyone had positive things to say. If we do move, it sounds like we will enjoy it.

Moved from York, PA to Raleigh just a year ago. I actually went to college in Raleigh and then moved to York.

Great place with lots to do. Nice friendly people although the Yanks are starting to take over! Don't expect to find the great deals on housing thought. The area is really growing and prices are staying stable.

Anyhow PM with any questions you might have.

By the way the whoever said stay away from Durham is right. Other than Duke the place is a shithole with a good chance of getting shot. Of course you are comiing from Philly! :tongue2:

Im into game bred dogs and theres allot of kennels based there and I spent a good summer over there. I liked the area allot.

Raleigh is a great place to live ( I live there now). PM me and let me know where the job would be located exactly and I can recommend some apartments or at least get you started looking in the right area

I don't particularly like Raleigh. It's too spread out. My friend lived right outside in Cary, and it was like 20+ minutes to go to wherever you needed to go for something - store, food, friends house. It got annoying. Guess it all depends on where you live though.

The weather sucks in the summer. So hot and humid. And people from that area sort of freak me out and think I'm weird because I'm a "Yankee."

I moved down from Pittsburgh to Raleigh (actually Apex) about 8 years ago. I absolutely love it. Things are a bit spread out, but there are shopping centers on every corner. I've got 3 grocery stores within 5 minutes of me.

The summers are hot, but everything is air conditioned. Also most of the places you'll work allow shorts. The best thing is in January - February, when its just a bit chilly down here, your relatives back up North are freezing.

Raleigh is very similar to Charlotte, just bit smaller and much cheaper. I've got friends in Charlotte, and their housing costs are about 25% more than ours.

As for the comment about Durham, there are definitely areas you want to stay out of. However there is tons of new growth in the Durham area. The South Point mall, which is one of the nicest around is considered to be in Durham, and there's lots of great places to live around that.

Unless you're living in the outskirts you're mostly going to be living with Yankees. Most of the people we know are from PA, NY area. Its rare to meet any true southerners. The ones we know however are extremely friendly. Its also fun to remind them that we won the "war".

Also, I was just told that the North Hills mall, has a bar called the Fox and the Hound, which is supposed to be an Eagles hangout. So if you're a football fan you'll have plenty of people to complain to about your lousy season :)

If you want PM me and I can help point you in the right direction of where to live.

Also, if anyone who lives in the Raleigh area wants to get together once a month or something, I think that could be fun.

If you want to watch some real football I'd be glad to take you to the Steelers fan club.

In addition to what everyone else has said, you just can't beat the college basketball in the area - Duke (University of NJ-Durham), Carowhina, and NC State all within 20 miles of each other. Lots of tailgating and I'm sure you will appreciate the hockey in town.

Funny you mention the Fox and Hound...there is one right by me now. Never knew they were a chain...

Also anyone have experience forming an LLC or INC and running it in one state for awhile and then moving to another state? Seems like its going be a hassle. I know I'll have to contact a lawyer but are there any tips to for an easy transition?

Raleigh overall is a nice place to live. 3hrs from the beach and 3hrs from the mountains for vacations.

The Raleigh/Cary/Apex area is a huge urban sprawl. So its important to identify what part of Raleigh the job is before you look for housing. for example you can get a nice place in north Raleigh but its 30-40 minutes away from downtown.

natekapi is correct that its spread out but its not like all of the grocery stores are only in one area. Practically anywhere you live will have grocery stores and basic shopping nearby.

Most people I know don't work downtown. They work in the RTP (Research Triangle Park), which is a centrally located area between Cary, Raleigh and Durham. All of the big tech companies (IBM, Nortel, Cisco, etc.) have a large presence there.

If you're involved in banking or government work, then you probably would be located downtown.

Like sloop said location is very important. Each area has a unique feel to it.
