The founders of Rap Genius did apologize, saying:

We effed up, other lyrics sites are almost definitely doing worse stuff, and we’ll stop. We’d love for Google to take a closer look at the whole lyrics search landscape and see whether it can make changes that would improve lyric search results.

Then they went on to defend themselves and point at how competitors are doing similar things.

Must be nice to get slapped and then have open lines of communication with Google ( on Christmas no less) on how to get the penalty removed. So the message from Google is that if you're a big enough site/brand you can get personalized help to get your site back in the SERPS, but if you're just a small timer then you're shit out of luck. The hypocrisy of Google know's no bounds.

It's Google's best move to penalize sites that never gave them any Adwords revenue:

It will be interesting to see if they treat RapGenius any different than Interflora, whose advertorial link penalty was removed while they were paying $thousands/day in Adwords:

We should do an update on where Rap Genius is on the 25th of Jan. to see what they did to attempt to rebound and what Google helped them with to clean up their act.
