Receiving donated organs...

So I crashed my bike a while back http://www.wickedfire.com/shooting-shit/157274-crash-burnsee.html and after I got back to Sweden so have I been to some specialist back and forth..

The damage I received has been super extensive, medial collateral ligament on the side is completely snapped of. Acl in the front is completely of and the one in the back is damaged. So the dr will do some surgery where they take ligaments from other places on my body, but there is not enough to borrow and they have to use donor ligaments from another person (who obviously died).

I dont really care about it but when I told my friend so did two off them react with a bit disgust and started to joke about it. I mean I'm happy sa fuck that it can be fixed so that I can run and ride bike again if I take care of my physio therapy.

Is it really a big deal accepting donated organs/tissue?

Get a second opinion on the success rate of the surgery. Orthopaedic surgeons are often ridiculously optimistic when it comes to telling you the longevity/success of their work.

Also, are their any potential immune system rejection problems? I know it's big problem for organs, but not so much for other tissues (e.g. cornea), but worth asking.

As for your friends' response. They are ignorant idiots. It's just cells. As long as it's been screened for disease (which it will have been if you're in a first world country), you're cool. I'd personally be happier if I had Hep B immunisation first, but will probably take too long to be effective for you to wait.

Also, if I were you I'd quit running even if you're better for something with less impact. Running is hard on your knees even if you're healthy. Knee injuries of all types screw up the biomechanics of the knee, and make it very likely you'll get crippling osteoarthritis when you're older. (your orthopod won't tell you this. They never do, because they don't follow up with patients over 25 years.)

EDIT: read this blog for why you need a second opinion (and to ask some questions of your orthopod, no matter how competent he seems:

I bet they would be singing a different tune if it was them.

If they are using donated parts are they going to use them for all of the repairs or still planning to use some or yours?

Good luck.

Fuck them get better bro. That "donor" probably wanted his parts to go to a healthy person like you anyway. I want my organs to go to someone that is gonna live life to fullest.

Your friends are retarded, if they were actually serious and not being sarcastic - their IQ level is probably below being mentally unstable.

I have a friend that had a similar surgery a few years ago and the results were good. I would tell them to use all donor ligaments so you dont end up with issue where they took stuff from later on.

I agree with the consensus.. fuck them. If it was me I wouldn't think twice... and if I died today, you could gladly have my ligaments. WTF do I need them for at that point?

The thing with my friends was mostly just trolling but it started the thought in my mind properly why would someone not do it, the dr that told med about it also specifically asked me if I was okey with receiving donated tissue. So there obviously people who don't want it..

Can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with it.

Oh wait...

Donor ligaments are a little different than organs sir. Cadaver ligament replacement is by far the most successful path for knee ligament repair, and its quite common.
