dont worry on what it comes installed with - if you find something you want you can always downgrade the windows version and even sell the key to someone looking for one.

aside from that, i say build your own -

build your own and for $1k including 3 monitors that is gonna be realllly tough

16GB
750PSU
120SSD
nice Graphics card
case
2 acer monitors

It's interesting how rage9's opinions have changed over the years ;)

Thanks for reminding me yet again. GET OUT OF MY HEAD MATTSEH.

As for all these assholes recommending Acer monitors, go get fucked. I've had my fair share of monitors over the last few years, get something great, you spend a shit ton of time looking at them. You won't get anything super awesome in your price range, but you can do much better than some Acers.

You can easily ask the guy at a computer shop to build the computer for you. You'll just pay a few extra bucks.
The difference between this and buying a "plug n play" computer is that you'll get better specs at a better price + a clean install of windows. Most of the plug n play computers come up with loads of crap from manufacturers that slow down the computer and use your RAM memory for nothing.

^^ What he said. If you don't want to build it yourself, then have the shop where you buy the components build it for you. Fuck buying some prebuilt shit tower. You'll get so much more bang for your buck this way.

I also fully agree with Rage, don't skimp on your monitors. If the OP can't get quality monitors along with the PC build for $1k, then I would recommend digging deep for an extra couple or three hundred to be able to get a pair of 24" Dell Ultrasharp or Asus PA248Q monitors, for example.

oh, and look for sluts.

you wanna make sure you have at least 4 sluts (ddr3) so you can upgrade.

nothing is more important than having good sluts and lots of them.

+ PSU (cheaping out on the PSU and getting one that comes with a case wouldn't be a good idea), optical drive & Windows.

I have a Rosewill sitting in my closet that's run nonstop for 3 years, he'll be fine.

People still have optical drives? I have one in my notebook because it came with one, but have no other use for one. I can't remember the last time I used a disc and it wasn't a PS3/Xbox 360/Dreamcast game (I still play my DC a couple times a month).

I agree, there is very little reason to have one anymore. Put that shit on a flash drive. I think Apple is not even putting them in anymore, the MBP I got earlier this year doesn't have one, and it doesn't really matter. I can probably count on one hand how many times in the last year I've used the optical drive on my main PC, and there is no reason I had to at all.

Yep. I put one in the HTPC on the off chance I want to watch a DVD, but I don't have one in my main rig. It's simply not needed.

These would make some nice monitors that would fit in your budget:

Amazon.com: Dell S2440L 24-Inch Screen LED-lit Monitor: Computers & Accessories

What is the reason behind the recommendation of the dell over the acer based on? I have been staring at my 22" acer for about a year and can't imagine how much better that dell could be. Are they sharper?

I have sworn never to buy anything from Dell, but perhaps I could be compelled to change my mind. But I have no idea why I would want to.

The only thing worth buying from Dell is their monitors. The Ultrasharps are really that good. They cost a few dollars more, but are crisp, have great color, loads of inputs and are completely ergonomic (height, tilt, swivel and rotate). I absolutely swear by them for graphics work. I've been coveting the 30" Dell Ultrasharp for awhile.

well maybe it's worth a look. How much is that 30?

400$ for two monitors, 600$ for the tower. I don't think he needs such monitors unless he does graphic work. Still, 200$ for one monitor is not going to get you far, but you should do your job with them.

15 minutes? Lol no.

Lol yeah.

Screw motherboard into the case = 3 minutes
Thermal paste/CPU on motherboard = 2 minutes
screw in Harddrive, hook up sata = 2 minutes
Optical drive, if you even bother = 2 minutes
Install RAM = 1 minute
Video card into motherboard = 2 minutes
screw in power supply, plug everything in = 3 minutes (unless your a fag with a windowed case and LED lights, then you're probably gonna fuck with the cables for 45 minutes here)

And these times are conservative, in case you've got Parkinson's disease or some shit.

Dell's IPS displays are badass. I did a side by side with my old monitor and couldn't believe how how yellow the whites actually were.

Then you realise you've left it until last to screw in the PSU and it wont fit past the other components on the mobo, :crying::crying:

In all seriousness, in the past everytime I've spent the time and effort to source parts and build my own PC, rushing to build it in 15 mins has never been a priority. Best to take your time, and do it right the first time.
