8bit = 256 colors (8x8x8), that is the max of the GIF format. (16 colors is 2bit)

With the animation, and the way a GIF compresses, and the 'shades' per frame, you're looking at several megabytes for the gif file, that hurts even modern browsers on decently powered machines.

Animated PNG supports 24bit colors with alpha transparency, but none of the 'current' versions of browsers support it cept maybe firefox 3.5
