Save some funds and see if there is an old heirloom ring in the family. I got my grandmothers after she died and it was a winner. Wife loved it, still does after 15 years of wearing it, and we spent the money on a trip to the Virgin Islands where I proposed to her.

I'm married - never bought an engagement ring - bought an engagement HOUSE instead.
