People get angry at evangelicals (and Christians in general) because their beliefs are a direct threat to liberalism. This anger has become so commonplace that it's actually accepted as a semi-valid position/argument. I mean can you imagine the lashing someone would take if they started publicly complaining about Jews voting or Hispanics voting? Hell, in 2004 the Hispanic vote was touted as the greatest thing since women's right to vote. Every candidate in sight (Bush included) went limp on immigration policy to try and capture some of it. I don't remember seeing a FRACTION of the outrage then that I see every time evangelical voters are mentioned.

And what is religion anyway if not a set of beliefs? So if there is a large body of voters in the US who all share certain beliefs, why does it matter that these beliefs are part of their religion? Would their beliefs be more or less valid if they were part of a political party? Or outlined on MoveOn.org? Or part of an ethnic special interest group? Would this make their voting power less offensive to you?

It's a waste of time to get angry because you're outnumbered. Either change minds or change countries. To get all pissed off because such a huge portion of the country doesn't agree with you accomplishes nothing.

Its not what they vote on that pisses people off its why they vote for it. The secret is out on how to win iowa. For the next 5 elections every politician walking through state will be carrying a bible and arguing over who's the most Christian.

I have to give you props dogfighter. That was the best representation of the christian vote arguement that I have seen on the board thus far. (no magic fairy dust logic or anything!) You are right in your last paragraph (although I would venture to say anger is a good thing as it leads to action many times) but we've got to start teaching this country to think for themselves and the way it starts is with discussions like these.

next election i'm voting for whoever has the best hair. Its a shared value that i feel strongly about.

Voting for someone cus of their hair is no different than voting for them because of their religion, sex, or race. Theres just no good way to justify it.

Eli-

You're absolutely right, but why doesn't that same indignation extend to stumping for gay marriage rights in San Francisco or John Kerry going to Florida and claiming that he's flown Israeli fighter jets and saying "I've climbed to the top of Masada and I've stood on the top of Masada and yelled out as the Air Force recruits and others used to from the side of that cliff, the words `Am Yisrael Chai!'"?

The bigger question is: SHOULD that indignation exist in the first place? I mean let's call it what it is: Good God-Damned Marketing! These guys are strapping on their crucifix-clipart landing pages because they know it will improve their quality score in Iowa.

Personally all I want is my money, my safety, and to be left the fuck alone. None of those stem from my religion. I'd be happy to vote for Joe Lieberman and I'm not fucking Jewish.

Evangelical Christians aren't the first to get snowed by politicians in this way. Senior citizens are sold on the idea that they'll be eating dog food if Republicans get into office, which is just as asinine as the Evangelicals who think that gay marriage is actually paving the way for a man to marry his dog someday.

edit: I just re-read that clipart-crucifix landing page line and realized what a MASSIVE geek I am. I can't believe women sleep with me. Neither can they.

And thanks to the nice comments from the two posters above. I generally stray from talking politics online but WF members really have their heads screwed on, even if we don't agree.

Wf has helped me to realize I'm a closet libertarian.

It's really too bad libertarians can't hold their own in current presidental elections as a party. I would say at that point I would be willing to leave the democratic party. However as long as the libertarians stay in bed with the Republicans, I'll stay where I am.

You won't join the Libertarian Party because they can't compete in elections...but you also won't join them because a libertarian-leaning candidate is running under the GOP in order to compete in elections?

And I don't see why you need to "leave" one party for another with such finality. If you're going to sever anything let it be blanket loyalty to (or loathing of) any party. Vote for the individuals rather than the labels or parties they fall under.

Wow, lots and lots of opinions. Pretty much like assholes. Everyone has one. I do not see one post that seems to know what is going on here. Does it really make a difference who gets in? They are all whores of the worst kind. They are all bought and paid for, long long ago.

If they were clean when they got there, they did/have not remained so for long. They are all traitors to this great land. But what the hell. we the People got what we paid for. After all, our leaders come from the people, how can they be better than those that elect them.

The Dums tell you what they are going to do and then do it. The Reps tell what they are not going to do and then do it anyway. They all talk shit.

All I can say is, if was to be a registered anything, it would be so that when I die there will be one less of the basturds.

For crying out load, stop voting for the best looking and the most likely to win and the lessor of two evils. Vote them all out, start over and Vote for that guy that is God fearing and uncompromising in his principles, if there is such a guy.

I would guess most people vote because of some reason or another. Billary cause she's a women, Obama cause he is black, Huck cause he is Christian. I guess that's just the way it is.
