Scariest film you've ever seen?

I have to agree with Blair Witch and 4th kind

Blair Witch had some real genius in it... the first of the low budget horror movies that had substance...

Paranormal Activity was a piece of crap in IMO.

And the 4th Kind was brilliant. Underrated as hell but amazing movie. Best UFO movie together with Communion

If you're looking for a nice ghost story instead of gore and jumps, I recommend The Devil's Backbone (el espinazo del diablo) and/or Lake Mungo. Both made me uncomfortable enough not want to switch the lights off a couple of hours later.

Guillermo del Toro rules!

Just remembered Event Horizon being pretty good. Not massively scary - certainly could have been more so. Good at putting you on edge a little, as it's a bit freaky.

Se7en is pretty scary and at the same time a good movie. Sure there are scarier and more fucked up ones but I wouldn't really watch that with a GF. As far as I remember The Grudge was that movie which consists of people walking down corridors while spooky music is played and nothing ever happens - boring as hell

The Descent, 4th Kind, Exorcism of Emily Rose, Mothman Prophecies, and The Ruins all irked the hell out of me. Not really sure how anyone could be scared of the ring/grudge.

As far as asian horror..... Battle Royale?

The Cube movies were kinda scary too.

Battle Royale is a great one if you have not seen it, not really horror just messed up.

Case 39. There is something very disturbing about not being able to trust your own senses.

Very strange. I thought The Cube films were lol, and none of the original 4 films you mentioned scary - but I the Ring shit me up. Guess I was a bit younger though, probably wouldn't now.

Some horror shouts (not scary)...

28 Days Later: Actually prefer this to The Descent as the best modern British horror film.
Braindead (also called Dead Alive): Gruesome early film from Peter Jackson.
Drag Me to Hell: Was very impressed with this. Sam Raimi should stick to this genre.
Let the Right One In: Very creepy vampire film.
Nosferatu: Excellent silent film, hard to believe this was released in 1922.
Psycho: Probably Hitchcock's finest (ranked as the #1 horror film on IMDB).
REC: A mix between 28 Days Later and The Blair Witch. The sequel was also quite good.
The Fly: For Jeff Goldblum's role as Seth Brundle.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: One of the all time greats.
