My original post was a response to Brandonbaker's observation that these types of massacres don't occur in Compton or Detroit but in suburbia.

My observation was that people in poorer neighbourhoods lived on top of each other, had to interact with each other, and in the process of interaction developed empathy and reduced inclination to commit massacres, whereas people who are isolated can and do distance themselves from their victims and see them as things rather than humans.

You responded by saying that you thought parenting was more important than socialising/interaction. I merely observed in response that your hypothesis implied that poorer areas had better parenting, and that couldn't possibly be true.

It seems unlikely that parenting in Compton and Detroit is better than parenting in Connecticut or whatever place this gunman was from. So parenting, while important, cannot be the main cause.

How else do you explain the way these massacres are occurring in isolated middle class suburbia rather than in crowded urban areas? It can't be down to superior parenting in urban areas (though I'm willing to be convinced if you have evidence).

I have to disagree with this. There is no fundamental difference between the callous gangbanger who kills for a pair of nike shoes/looked at me the wrong way and this asshole. This might be a major factor for many of them, but to confidently say that one or two things on their own can cause this is a big time oversimplification.

The Columbine kids went bowling the night before. The main correlation between them and most of the other killers would be that they were males. This is just one of many factors that shouldn't be ignored. But to say I've narrowed it down and that being born with a penis is THE cause for this, that would be a ridiculous oversimplification.

For serial killers, the main factors appear to be "serial killer genes" combined with being a male who suffered severe childhood trauma. However, that is also a simplified theory as there have been female serial killers, and there also have been plenty of people with the genes who were abused but didn't end up being killers, some killers may not have the genes, etc.

500 children die in the US every year because of accidents with guns, is it really wise to have more guns around large groups of children? teachers never make mistakes though right? like accidentally leaving a gun in their desk drawer.

What if 20 children die every year because of gun accidents at schools caused by negligent teachers, but one massacre of 20 children was prevented? is that a better outcome?

Gangs, for the most part, only go after other gangs. So if you are a part of the game, expect to play. If you're not, you're probably okay. You won't find gangs randomly shooting up elementary schools. They also won't kill their own mother.
