Just passing the time here. I was bored and decided I was going to find out what site ranks #1 on Google for "SEO" and see what it's backlinks portfolio looked like.

To my surprise it's a company called Slingshot SEO. I thought it sounded familiar and.. turns out it is located about 40 minutes from where I live 0_o

I think MikeShinobi also lives close by? Just having a brain run-on. Think I'm going to see if I can get my companies website to out-rank them in serps :)

Pretty sure you're seeing it because of the geo location. Checked on two computers based in US and they come up on the 3rd page.

Good luck on the #1 though. Sure one of Mike's Squidoo links will get you top 3 at least.

They are an agency about 2-3 hours from me up in Indy.

They are actually a pretty large agency and often come up on non personalized searches I do in the USA for similar terms.

I tried to rank for SEO keywords a few years back. Won't make that shitty mistake ever again.

Google manually flushes out every site in the Top 10 every several months, and even if you slip through the cracks the first time, you'll probably get whacked the next time around.

If you don't believe me, take a screenshot of the top 10 for phrases like "SEO Company" and "SEO Services" every 6 months. By the third time around you'll see what I'm talking about. I won't name any names, but the site that ranked #1 for "SEO Company" from about 2010 to 2011 (consistently) is now completely obliterated from the SERPs. Their site hasn't changed whatsoever.

The only way I'd ever try to rank for SEO keywords again is if I was building 10 sites at a time and by the time my best one got whacked, I'd have 9 more coming through the pipelines.

It's hard to win when the game isn't fair. And I can tell you from 12 months of pursuit that this particular game is not.

But alas, YMMV.

I totally hear what you are saying, and this is true for the big boy SEO keywords, but no so much for the niche, state, and regional kwds. I've been getting businss from being at the top for half a dozen SEO kwds now for a few years and sitting comfy there.

I think these big brands thought that "I'm a big brand and can SPAM away."

Let's not forget Google has a special filter for SEO keywords :)

Oh, totally agreed. Ranking #1 for local SEO keywords is a cakewalk. Just a word of caution to anyone wanting to get a little greedier. ;)

Experienced the same, even with national long tail SEO keywords the rankings would only last so long and it takes constant efforts and babysitting but geo targeted SEO terms still seem to stick. Big markets are pretty competitive for SEO terms and they are all a bunch of whiny little bitches when you're in the top 3 for the main keywords. My competitors would write blog posts about why they should be #1 because they are white hat and that my site had grey hat/BH links yada yada yada... Right down to posting ahref and majestic link reports on my site, outing the "suspect" links which were, according to these "SEO experts" the reason I was #1 and they weren't... The whole space is filled with moz fan boys, at least from what I've experienced.

The SEO related keywords constantly change for the same reason the payday ones do. Everyone breaks the guidelines. It's the only way you rank for the most ultra comp terms.

Ranking with "whitehat" for the keyword "SEO" for example is a laughable prospect for any commercial lander without an SEO Moz style budget. (Even they don't manage it, their best keyword is SEO Software or something?)

When my site was booted off the first page for "SEO Company," the #1 site stayed put for another good 6 months or more. Then all of a sudden it too was whacked, while nothing had changed whatsoever.

I'm not saying we all had squeaky clean sites, but I am saying that there is randomness involved with national SEO keywords and I wouldn't advise building my business model around something so fickle.

I personally know the owners of plenty of the sites you'll see on the first page for that keyword. It's largely the same guys that ranked 2-3 years ago, just with different sites. That's why I'm saying, if you are dead set on ranking for these keywords, be prepared to have backup sites when your top site gets whacked.

Trying to rank #1 on Google for "Seo Company" is like trying to get a flyer for your Escort Service posted on the police department bulletin board?

You should ask Rand Fishkin what he does. He ranks #16 for 'SEO software'

I've been throwing around the thought of going for super local / regional keywords like that. Probably going to start off with Andrew's local citations. I have been talking with him here lately, guy knows his stuff!

Isn't it easier to just go find clients on forums/groups they hangout in. Seems like most local professionals these days need a site.

Just an idea.
If I had an SEO company I would pick a niche. Say target only contractors or gaywebmasters. That way you can really have a targeted pitch. Give away something free pick up a lead and work it.

People do it on this forum everyday.

I've done that regarding building websites. Found a guy on a forum about fedoras ( hats, one of my obsessions ). I made a spec site and contacted the guy who sells hand-made montecristi hats from Equador.. A few months later I was the happy new owner of 1,495 in "hat credit". I've only used about half that though. :food-smiley-002:

I'm talking about local pros that buy leads online.

But you're right if there looking for SEO Company online there pretty much ready to pay.
